We are a small homestead/family farm located in the high plains of New Mexico. We are starting our farm from scratch, helping turn raw land into healthy soil while building our own fun tiny house from RV's that we have collected. Our gardens are still in the trial stages as we learn what varieties work best for our climate and practices, we love producing as much as we can from our farm, including drinks, herbs, and medicines, along with our food. We are currently raising pigs, chickens,, and rabbits for meat and have two milk cows for fresh milk and cheese.
We garden organically using a small solar powered heated and cooled greenhouse and raised beds, utilizing covered row tunnels to help lengthen our short and somewhat tempermental growing season. We have several ongoing building projects, most that are necessary for farm functions such as barns and pasture fences. But some are just for fun! We try to use recycled products and have been able to successfully reuse items that others have discarded, such as in our horse barn and training ring, where we have utilized tires in the design and sheds built from the wood of old barns. Our current major projects are building a wash/pack shed, new pig pens, a chicken egg mobile, fencing, a cool circular earthbag outhouse and shower (it's almost finished!), and remodeling the Dome, including plastering the exterior with stucco. We are also growing native fruit trees, bushes, and grasses for windbreaks and hedging.We are completely off grid and utilize solar power and a wind generator. We haul all of our water and setup rainwater harvesting setups on all buildings possible. We are always needing strong, motivated, self starting, imaginative, creative people to help in the design and creation of projects. It is rough country here and at over 7500 ft in elevation one must be able to adapt and adjust quickly.
Our typical work day begins at 9 a.m. with milking, feeding and watering the animals, then moving on to whatever projects we are currently working on. We are 30 miles from the nearest towns where we buy supplies and we require 4x4 to get in and out on occasions both summer and winter. There are miles and miles of empty land surrounding us, perfect for nature walks, hiking, and rock hounding. We are also located within a couple hours drive of many National Forests, Malpais National Park, the Gila Cliff Dwellings, and Sunrise Ski Resort, which also has summer activities such as zip lines and trail rides. Our area is also well known for the Quemado Lightning Field, open during our monsoon season which begins in July. Our summer storms are intense and amazing to experience! My husband Andy teaches at our local high school and owns an Auto Repair Center in Quemado and we host the local Farmers' Market there. We would love to find an individual or couple who would like to stay with us long term and help us finish up a bunch of long standing projects.
*****Must have vehicle with good ground clearance that can travel our rough and rocky road.. There is no public transportation and we will not be able to pick you up from a far away airport or bus station.
*There is limited cellular service, we do have a wi-fi connection in our house that may be accessed, however it’s slow. There is also our home telephone that may be used if needed.
*Anyone with special diets, vegetarians, vegans, keto whatever - you are welcome, however you will be responsible for preparing your own meals, we no longer want to purchase so much food from a grocery store and are limiting this option as it does not mesh with our homestead goals. You must bring your own snacks and/or specialty items, inluding sodas, alcoholic beverages, etc. no matter what diet you follow. Refrigeration is limited, ice chests are recommended.
*We are a Meat Producing Farm. We raise pigs and rabbits for market, sell organic eggs, and raise beef steers. In our gardens we are transitioning to a more high production market setup.
*Good shoes/boots, gloves, and a hat are required. A heavy jacket during the winter is a must, and lightweight jackets, hoodies, flannel, etc are helpful year round. We will not provide these items so come prepared.
*All personal hygiene items such as soaps* and sunscreens should be environmentally friendly as we use composting toilets and recycle our grey water to fruit trees. *We offer an assortment of locally made milk soaps for your use
*Accommodations for Guests is a large geodesic dome (think glamping!) it has a small solar set up for lighting and charging cell phones.
