I’m glad you’re reading this.
Our immediate need is for help getting some solar panels exchanged on our roof. This needs to be done in May because it will be too hot on the roof after that.
Here’s what we’re up to:
*moving third generation Tilapia into different tanks.
* adding more Solar panels
* planting seeds and transplants.
* building tool shed inside Solar Barn.
* making doors for Solar Barn
* watering, mulching, weeding, mowing
* sowing seeds for transplants of herb plants (echinacea, bone set, etc)
* Swimming in the waterfall at the River.
* Projects change as completed, and with the seasons. So do check back.
Our homestead’s central focus is sustainability and building resilient community! On just under 5 acres, we steward medicinal plants, shiitake mushrooms, veggies & tree fruits, ducks & geese, Tilapia fish, solar home & solar business, intentional community, growing native plants, insect supporting perennials for our local Restoration Nursery, and permaculture design. The entire 84 acre community property has had almost no non-organic anything since property purchased in 1975! We are working on healing our selves/spot on the planet, right here, right now! We are engaged in self-illumination, cultural humility, and dismantling white privilege. Doing Anti-racist work and reversing climate catastrophe are of paramount priority in our lives. Come be our guest and learn about these things along with us.
We have helped people *aspiring* to serve in the PEACE CORPS and we are a “soft-landing” for folks *after* serving in PEACE CORPS and other similar situations.
We have Tilapia fish that live in 5 feet tall circular Solar Algae tanks in our living room. We are nurturing our 3rd generation of Tilapia now.
We have cultivated Elder bushes, blueberries, strawberries, apples, Asian pears, cherry, pomegranate, mulberry, and persimmon fruits. Boysenberries are next.
It’s never dull here and we intentionally make and take time for relaxation and fun (hiking to the river, bicycling, cards, daydreaming, naps, singing, star gazing). Do you know how to play the card game “Oh, Hell”? Oh, yeah!
We host guests year-round, so apply for whatever time is good for you. We prefer a month as a good length of time, though we welcome guests who would like to come for as little as a week if we have space available. We’ve welcomed travelers from all over the world since 2002 and delight in the resulting relationships. Volunteers frequently become like family and many return to visit again and again. We hope you will be one of these. Read the reviews below for their experiences with us. We also host guests on the Workaway platform and have reviews there, too.
We are situated in the beautiful Appalachian foothills of rural, northern Alabama, in a 48+ year old, alive and thriving, co-operative intentional community. Our intentional community's land consists of meadow, woods, creek and pond, and several land "holdings" where intentional community members live. Our pond is 3-acres & cold-spring-fed (think swimming ahhh! and fishing & canoeing). We have built diverse creative homes (underground, yurts, solar, tiny houses, chevron, all hand-crafted), with an adapted-for-the-Southeast EarthShip inspired-home on the drawing board. We enjoy hiking to the free-flowing local river nearby. We currently do outside tasks in the am to the middle of the day when it’s usually warmer. We eat our large meal of the day at 1 pm or so and then take the afternoon off for indoor projects, naps, or personal time. Some guests find paid work with neighbors nearby.
We welcome your kind assistance for 5 hours a day, five days a week. You can stack hours/days and head out to explore. There is lots to see and do around here and in nearby cities.
We welcome flexible vegans all the way to omnivores. We welcome maturity and kindness, no matter how old you are. Our strong preference is for cheerful, happy, positive people.
Another intentional community and many like-minded neighbors have moved close by. Together, we have created a good life here and frequently gather for WorkPlay Days, Game Nights, yoga and Tai Chi, music jams, pot-lucks, ukulele classes, harmonica classes, uvulating lessons, movie nights, talent shows, parties, song nights, meditation, volleyball, silly parades, fermenting, contra-dancing, and teaching kids and adults about protecting our local river through our award winning river protection organization, Friends of the Locust Fork River.
WWOOFERs are welcome to join in any of this. It's not only possible ... we are making a better world NOW!
The bottom line is we love hosting and we hope you will you come be our guest and see what all the fuss is about !!
So. We invite you to join us. Alabama will never be the same for you.
If you made it through all this and would like to see if WWOOFING with us would work for you, reach out with your phone number in your note to us. We’ll send you ours. We can text to find a good time for you and for us to talk on the phone.
IMPORTANT NOTE: ***1) We require you to have current health insurance.
2). We’ve recently restored our Covid vaccination and current Covid booster requirement because we have elders here in our community at risk for respiratory infections. Our non-negotiable requirement is to protect them, and us. We’re happy for you if your immune system is strong but our requirement is not about you. It’s for us.
3) We ONLY welcome people who are both non-smokers and non-vapers. We are not interested in folks who quit so they can stay here.
4) We absolutely insist on LGBTQ safe and friendly guests. These are non-negotiable requirements. Please don’t contact us if you cannot fulfill them.
Additionally , we cannot welcome children or pets. Even well-behaved or tasty ones.
Have a day filled with awe and wonder.
