What is WWOOFÂź?

Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) links visitors with organic farmers, promotes an educational and cultural exchange and builds a global community conscious of ecological farming practices.

WWOOF was founded in 1971 and is one of the world’s first educational and cultural exchange programs. Today, WWOOF is in more than 132 countries around the world (and growing).

Liz’s farm was my first experience with wwoof, and all I can say is she has set a really high bar. To sum up the experience, it was both welcoming and enriching. Liz has a crazy amount of passion for the work she does and what she produces. Being around that energy while working is incredibly motivating, and makes the learning aspect of wwoof really enjoyable. She was willing to answer questions, and not only tell us the answers, but show us as well. My time on her farm was about a month, and both me and my dog had a healing and exciting time in Florida. As a host, Liz was really kind, receptive, and supportive. Her energy definitely pushed us to realize our abilities and strengths we could use on the farm.

We had such a great time with Jack, Loraine and their family. Their house which the’ve just finished building is very nice to spend time in. In a couple weeks, we had deep interesting conversations and became really good friends. Being in the winter, we mainly helped with some ground work for next season e.g., laying irrigation lines. Accomodation was nice, food was great. Highly recommend the place to future wwoofers.

Staying at the farm and working on the orchard was rewarding and rejuvenating — I extended my stay from a couple weeks to two months because I didn’t want to leave! Tom and Ramona are deeply good people and attentive hosts, and the land is peaceful and grounding; you feel it as soon as you arrive. Daily tasks were varied: picking fruit, pruning, planting, weeding, and helping with little side projects. Working alongside Tom was relaxed and satisfying — he sets clear expectations, is patient and kind, with a dry sense of humor and stories to tell. He makes sure you’re taking care of yourself while giving you independence. Most days, when he called it a wrap, I was surprised by how quickly time had passed and often wanted to keep working. Helping at the Portland Farmers Market every weekend was a highlight — fun to see the fruits of your labor appreciated by new customers and their large and loyal base of regulars! I learned a lot from both Tom and Ramona. They bring different and complementary strengths and perspectives — I’d hear from Tom’s humble expertise on every facet of organic farming in the morning, and get into a meditative flow picking apples with Ramona in the afternoon, absorbing her wisdom about spiritual and creative practices. I loved staying in the RV. Accommodations are rustic and comfortable, in a beautiful spot with stunning views and sunsets. I could really absorb the subtle shifts in the weather, land, sky, animal and plant life, and slept so deeply.

I had a great first WWOOF experience at Michele's mini farm. Michele is a great teacher who listened to my interests and answered my questions with intentionality. The physical labor consisted of weeding, preparing garden beds with horse manure and straw, and planting. Michele prepared plant-based lunches and dinners each day and provided recommendations for things to do in her town, which helped me feel at home. I walked away from this week long stay feeling grounded, accomplished, and appreciative.

I can’t express enough how much I’ve enjoyed my time here! John and Lynn are incredibly good people, thorough teachers, and generous hosts. I’ve learned so many things in the past few months, how to till the ground, operate a tractor, sow cover crop, work with bees, bake gluten free, sell at a farmers market, and the detailed care of the other animals on the farm which included a llama, three alpacas, chickens, and turkeys. Along with many more things! John doesn’t just tell you what to do, he explains the “why”, and answers questions with patience. If you are hesitating
don’t! This is an experience you won’t regret and certainly won’t forget.

Learning from Luke is an awesome experience. You will get dirty and learn the ins and outs of a real, working hog farm. If you are interested in small(ish) scale meat production and being involved in the local community this is a good place for you. There are ample opportunities to learn about animal husbandry, meat production, and the art of butchery. In addition to meat production, there are homesteading skills galore to be learned on the farm. There is a lot of compassion and love here and we are looking forward to when we can go back.

This is such a special place! I can’t say thank you enough to all the magical beings that made this experience so wonderful. Each day is full of intention, learning, growth, and rich conversations. The educational opportunities are better than going to college (in my opinion) - you’ll learn so much, gain so many new experiences, heal physically and emotionally, and eat the most delicious food (often straight from the farm! what a gift!). The people here are so special and exercise a level of care that is so inspiring. The work is fun. The land is beautiful. The animals are a joy. The people are bright lights. I could say so much more but a thank you will have to suffice. Gratitude for all the memories I will look back on so fondly.

Stayed for a little over a month, but wish I had made it the whole season! Charlotte and Phil are warm and welcoming hosts, accommodations are clean and (relatively) private. Charlotte shares her vast knowledge of various farming methods and practices freely, while providing hands-on learning opportunities over a huge variety of projects and plants. I felt extremely connected to the community as a whole, having access to attend/learn from several local events, projects, and organizations. I am extremely grateful for my time here and for the company of Charlotte, Phil, and the whole community :)

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this magical place. Lauren was so so kind, welcoming, and accommodating and made sure I had everything I needed while I was there. She’s excellent at communicating expectations and upcoming plans for the day/week and made sure I had plenty of time for breaks. Lauren is an encyclopedia of knowledge on all things goats and cheese making and had such valuable insights on the realities of owning and operating a dairy farm. I am forever grateful for Laurens mentorship and will continue learning from her for as long as I can. I was inspired by her everyday. And the GOATS. The goats steal your heart in every possible way. Even the ones that are extra hard to win over (Puku). In just two weeks I had learned so much about each of their unique and complex personalities that left me with a new appreciation for animals and a new perspective on what it really takes to work with animals in an ethical way. Lauren takes the time to make sure each goat feels loved and appreciated and is well taken care of. All of these amazing takeaways for me were only made possible because of how much I was willing to submit myself to the experience. There are long days, and early mornings, and stinky times, but the amount of knowledge and perspective I gained from this experience was truly priceless. I cant wait to come back! ❀❀❀
