What is WWOOFÂź?

Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) links visitors with organic farmers, promotes an educational and cultural exchange and builds a global community conscious of ecological farming practices.

Joshua is an amazing host. He hosted me in winter the toughest time to live in Alaska. He came to Anchorage airport to pick me up. His house is very unique with Hacienda architecture. He has three beautiful dogs. Orso, Luna, and soley. I was automating Generator Room vents. He is very hands on and he built his own house. It took him 3 years to finish it. I got a chance to meet some of his Family during my stay. We did some fun activities like Snow machining. I learnt that in Winter in Alaska the house becomes a baby which need a constant attention wether the chimney fire and heat is on. I got a lot of insights into life of living off grid. One of the skill I'm taking home from this experience is layering the warm clothes for different temperatures. Joshua is very knowledgeable on the topic of geopolitics and i had some great conversation with him about the World. I got to experience the cutting and decoration of Christmas tree for the first time. He is a great host. I highly recommend to wwoof at his Farm. I also get to see the start of Copper 300 a sledge dog race of 300 miles. It was my first sledge dog race and get to see the community living around glennallen. Happy Hosting, Mahipal

We stayed at this location for roughly 10 days. Snow and the Dotty Tree Farm employees were great to be around (shouts out Bob). The living accommodations were pleasant (beds, a heater, flushing toilets, and a hot indoor shower), communication was open, and the work was straightforward. We were able to get groceries to cook at home by reaching out to Snow, so food was great. The farm itself is still up and coming and there are lots of possible projects. As we were there in January, we worked on cleaning, organization, digging the acequia (water ditch), planting, watering, and assorted construction projects. It’s helpful to have a car to visit spots in town or get to Santa Fe or Albuquerque. Placitas is a cute little town and the farm had great views and good access to cool hikes! Beautiful sunrises and sunsets. This is overall an awesome place and we’d recommend a visit. We hope to come back at some point!

Rob and Olivia were amazing hosts! This was my first experience WWOOFing and it was everything I was looking for and more. I stayed for 3 weeks last July alongside 3 other WOOFers and honestly could have stayed for much longer. I was trying to understand what self-sufficiency looks like on a small scale, to learn about what it took to homestead, and also what it felt like to live the lifestyle. I was also curious about the infrastructure projects and construction techniques. I appreciated it so much that Rob kept all of that in mind during my stay. I expressed interest in the mill and was working on it within the first week. I expressed interest in infrastructure projects and Rob made sure to call me over to show me how he was building out the pavilion. And in my last week I got to use the lumber I cut in week one to put boards on an outhouse. Some days, tasks just needed doing like weeding or working on rammed earth tires, but he was definitely invested in my growth and learning, and I learned tons through our conversations. I wasn’t particularly handy before the stay but the confidence and skills I got during the stay were an invaluable foundation. This is such a unique place and I felt like I was really part of a community - one that I plan to stay connected to. If you’re on the fence about staying here, do it!

From QuĂ©bec to Crystal Forest, from the snow to the peaceful « lopin de terre Â». I had a great time meeting her and Ty and B. Crystal does know a lot a thing! You’ll never see the end of her knowledge. I had to feed the animal (20 rabbits, 5 turkeys and 20 chickens, and the dogs, and the chicks, and the cat 😊) twice a day. I was also pulling weed out, the dishes, fixed a bit the pathways. We cutted banana tree, Tangerine. Ill remember those moment alot. The house as the basic ameneties, needs love, its small but hey, real life is outside. Thanks you again for those moment. Forever grateful for a first experience has woofing

Highly recommend this WWOOF site to anybody seeking to experience animals care and community living. Helpful traits to have include flexibility, patience, proactiveness, and communication. My main tasks were feeding the rabbits, goats, pigs and chickens on the farm. I also harvested some willow tree branches, canned persimmons, and planted some seeds. There are two days per week where you’ll do a group project, and the rest of the time you choose tasks of your interests that can be done independently or in smaller groups. I stayed in one of the trailers on site, which had electricity and running water. For cooking, showering, and using WiFi, the communal trailer was a brief walk away. I stayed for a little less than two weeks, and it was truly not enough time to learn everything Jenna and Nate have to offer! Thank you Jenna & Nate for your flexibility when I had to change my dates a few times, and your generosity with sharing your knowledge. I’ll be sure to visit!

Kezia and Jordan's place was an amazing experience. It's a young intentional community with a good foundation and tons of potential. I was there during the winter so can't speak for the gardens but there was lots of building and infrastructure projects to work on. A great community that prioritizes ecological balance and mental health, which was a bit of a suprise but not at all unwelcome or oppressive. A pretty piece of land that they are working hard to honor. Did not expect the level of comradarie and peace that I found during my time here. I will say the place is best suited to folks that are self sufficient, self regulating, and self motivated, but like to live communally. Which suited me very well, but could be a challenge to others. I would love to come back someday.

John & Kathy are amazing hosts and I have loved every second of working on their farm. They are both hilarious and so much fun to be around. The work includes all kinds of things - weeding, mowing, pickaxing, harvesting fruit, planting seeds, painting, and obviously keeping the area you live in tidy. I've been here with 6 other people and each one of them has been an amazing addition to the farm. It feels just like a large family here - cats, chickens, the occasional dog, and all of us of course. The farm is in the best location possible as we get cooler & more tropical weather to work in and warmer, slightly drier weather when we want to head down to the ocean. I've been here without a car or bike but have found it very easy to hitchhike, run, or walk wherever I need to go (it's fun if you're already an active person!). The people that live on this island are very welcoming and kind and love to help out when they can. If you get along with people easily, are a hard worker, and have a great attitude, you will thrive at this farm. This place will forever hold a special place in my heart. John & Kathy have made a wonderful little paradise with wonderful people!

Staying here was great! Snow showed us around and let us work independently while checking in as needed. Food was provided and the employees who stopped in on some days were great. Nice to have a comfortable house for the woofers with a kitchen/showers/toilet. New Mexico has lots to see!

Todd's property is beautiful. It's like a resort. There are lots of cool nooks and gardens to relax in when not working. I stayed in the yurt which is pretty comfortable. Todd gave clear instructions, and checked in frequently. 6 hours/day is more than I've worked for other hosts, but the accommodations were some of the nicest I've stayed at.

Great experience at this farm. Chris is super knowledgeable - great person to learn from (Joe too!)... and love their orientation to farming, the environment, etc. Enjoyed the work - a whole bunch of harvesting/preparing veggies for market, as well as business customers (e.g., stores, restaurants)... And delightful finishing days with JV's delicious home-cooked meals - with plenty of leftovers. Beautiful property - comfortable accommodation - nice location.

Kay and Brad are very kind and generous, offering food and nice housing in exchange for 3.4 hours of work a day. Kay is always open to questions and tries to make our time there more comfortable and enjoyable. The work is mostly weeding but if we get bored, they will give us other tasks around the garden. There is a lot of flexibility on when you want to put in hours but they like to have us work mornings on Mondays and Tuesdays. They are very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about gardening so if you want to learn, try to schedule your hours when they’re working and ask questions! Getting around the island without a car is difficult but if you plan your day well, it is definitely possible! The location is right on the Mamalahoa Hwy so it is right on the bus route and you can also hitchhike to south point and nearby beaches like Punalu’u (black sand).
