Garden / Orchard with extensive berry and vegetable plantings. Sited at 2500' on 40 wooded acres that border National Forest Land. We are working towards sustainability, especially in food production, processing, storage, and low impact construction. Planting usually begins in April and we need people through October.Learn about cool climate gardening, root cellaring, winemaking, non-toxic weed control, deer proof fencing, local economies (Farmer's market, barter,..), seed saving, straw bale construction, drip irrigation, simple/ effective composting toilets, solar showers, lacto- fermentation, jam and sauce canning on a wood fired stove, modern homesteading, forestry and stream restoration etc. There are tons of great recreational activities in the area. We try to get out a lot hiking, biking, fishing, canoeing, or just riding down to the lake for a swim.
Most of the property is set aside for wildlife which include bears, mountain lions, bobcats, coyote, deer, elk, moose and lots of rodents. We also have thick mosquitos during June and July but have netting and screen tents to get away from them. Mosquitos can be oppressive, there are lots of other bugs too. Other inconveniences include cold nights, hot days, dust and wildfire smoke at times, but generally it is a fun and comfortable place if you like being outside.
We have a sauna that sits above the creek, a nice place to dunk after working in the garden.Accommodations are in the rustic range but comfortable. We have one 16' yurt that is set aside for woofers. It has a wood stove and firewood for cold nights. People always tell us that they love the yurt! Otherwise there are lots of nice camping spots near the creek when we have larger groups. There is a screened outdoor kitchen that we share in the warm months, well equipped and clean. We like to eat a lot of meals together and with neighbors. There is a solar shower and wood fired tub as well. We need wwoofers from April through October and would like folks to commit for 1 - 2 weeks or more.
Certifications: we use organic methods but are not certified
