Thank you all for your interest in our farm project! We are chock-a-block like they say in New Zealand, which means full full full for Summer 2024. Sorry we are not accepting more volunteers until next summer. Rick and Nels run this farm near Juneau. It is a beautiful, wet and wonderful piece of property, very remote (2 hour kayak from Auke Bay), no cars, very little electricity (solar power). We raise vegetables in raised beds, live outdoors all summer. We need wwoofers from May 5 to October 5. We have built a small timber frame cabin from timbers milled on our property. Accommodation for WWOOFers is an apartment above the woodshed or in a big wall tent in the meadow. Or if you prefer, you can bring your own tent and use one of the tent platforms. Hot tub under the stars, community kitchen, outhouse in the blueberry bushes. Work includes gardening, soil building, pioneering, building projects, carrying materials from the beach, firewood, and many other creative projects. Volunteers must enjoy the simple things in life, be quite fit, community minded, ready to rough it softly, love to work, be OK with living remote. 5 hours of work per day in exchange for really good vegetarian and Alaska wild food. Minimum stay 2 weeks. You need this much time to really get the feel of the place. Maximum stay is 6 weeks your first year. We would love having you if you are the kind of person who wants a break from the internet and social media and is ready to really be open to the others on the farm. Our rule about your use of technology is that it should be your secret! :) Good dogs welcome, children not out of the question, no tobacco use whatsoever please. All are welcome, gay people especially so. Call ahead so we can arrange transport. I speak fluent English, Spanish, German, Hungarian, and dabble in French. I hosted over 20 volunteers last year and consider my volunteer community the true wealth of my project .Please be a morning person- we meet at 8 am for breakfast and discuss the day's work then. Six rules of the farm:1. You are responsible for your own happiness- let others know how they can help you.2. Be kind and considerate to all around you- love is all you need.3. Respect all life here- if it is alive, let it thrive!4. Open yourself up to your creativity- respect past work but feel free to reinvent.5. Use work as a meditation- work safely!  If you are not clear on how to use a tool, please ask before using it!  If you are not enjoying the work you are doing, you are not adding good energy to the project.6. Avoid waste- reimagine everything's usefulness. Organic methods: Hugelkultur, raised beds, compost. Certifications: We don't sell much at all, so certification is not important to us. Current projects: 25 raised beds to tend, 2 round wood timber framing structures in progress.

I learned a lot about different skills necessary to living an “off grid” life which include carpentry and food production and storage. Shelter island is a beautiful space with incredible views, sunsets, and recreation activities. My personal favorite was swimmy lake. Make sure you check it out!

My first experience wwoofing at Wabi Sabi and meeting Rick and Nels was otherworldly. Theres truly no other place imaginable where I could have learned the things I did here. Many of the activities are strictly dependent on the gorgeous environment you find yourself in upon arrival. Rick and Nels gracefully share their utmost expertise on living off the overall abundance of the land. There was never a moment of unease when I was in their company or that of the other wwoofers. I experienced many 'firsts' while I was here, all the while surrounded by newfound family and friends, which made it exponentially more valuable and reassuring. Some activities I did include building/sifting compost, collecting seaweed, cooking/ eating yummy food, helping build the shop, foraging, weeding, listening to Rick's tunes, chopping wood (be careful with the axe!) and much more. Some unforeseen circumstances prompted me to return to town early along with Rick and Nels, but they made sure I was ok and tuned in to the culture of Juneau while I spent my last few days there. It was nothing short of a gift to end up on Wabi Sabi and experience it how I did, even though we had the long days of summer, time passed super fast and I would no doubt return in a heart beat. Highly suggest this amazing place to anyone wanting to get off the beaten path and experience the pristine forests of SE Alaska, you will surely create an unforgettable memory.

What a lifechanging experience! Rick and Nels were such wonderful hosts for my 1st WWOOFing experience; they are both full of wisdom, kindness, and motivation and inspiration to get things done. I learned so much while I was there and enjoyed it all thouroughly (once I got past the culture shock). Because Wabi Sabi is located on an island that is isolated from Juneau (as well as other circumstances), I think this experience was a bit more primitive than I would have imaged, but that fact made all the difference; I am sure I enjoyed the experience more because of it. During my month and a half stay, I completed so many projects and felt confident doing so, especially as my stay went on, Over the course of 5 and half weeks, I really bonded with Rick, Nels, and the other WWOOFers. With the limited technology I really had the chance to break away from its grasp and just enjoy the moment. As a result of this experience, I feel more connected to and appreciative of nature, in tune with and more confident in my abilities. I am beyond thankful that I decided to WWOOF this Summer, and even more grateful that I choose Wabi Sabi to host my first experience!

What really stood out to me about Wabi Sabi was the community, I had a lot of good conversations with a lot of good people, especially during the solstice party. Everyone was great and very welcoming. The food was good, the majority of it is brought in from town with some salad greens and garlic coming from the garden, though more vegetables would be ready for harvest later in the summer. I visited early in the season and we were mostly working in the gardens building huegulkultur beds and setting the foundations for a new building at the beach, but I did not get to do any timber framing during my stay which was a bummer. Expect to work a lot, roughly 5 hours every day, sometimes more. Overall it was a good experience, but I wish I had gotten to do more timber framing. I would highly recommend visiting during the solstice party, that was the highlight of my trip.

My Wabi Sabi experience was honestly an amazing experience. The Wabi Sabi farm is magical. It was my first time in Alaska and Rick and his family and friends made me feel so welcomed and showed me a really great time. Rick has a great system down for WWOOFers in regards to accommodation, chores, working, etc. The food was even amazing!!! Rick is an awesome cook. It's a very welcoming and safe space, and flexible for any type of worker. I truly appreciate my time there and Rick for accommodating me and my plans.

The time I spent at wabi sabi is one of the most freeing, rewarding, and monumental moments of my life thus far. I instantly felt welcomed and comfortable when I arrived in Juneau and have missed wabi sabi ever since I left. Rick is an amazing host, an excellent cook, and very knowledgeable. Nels is also a really wonderful and kind person and will gladly share his plethora of horticulture knowledge. I can’t say enough good things about wabi sabi. Be prepared to work hard, eat well, and have the time of your life.
