A cooperative ecological agriculture project using native wisdom and regenerative principals. CSA.

***Please read our full farm description and profile before requesting a visit***
***We are currently only accepting volunteers through October, but may consider stays into November if you have your own comfortable and warm accommodations such as a van or RV.
We primarily seek longer term visits of at least three to four weeks. We may consider shorter visits, especially if you have pertinent experience. You'll get the most out of a longer stay.
We are land stewards on our 16 acre regenerative agriculture project and CSA farm. We've been on this property since late summer 2015. It was previously irrigated grass hay pasture that was cut, bailed and removed. We have been transforming it into a bio-intensive, diverse landscape, bursting with productive perennials, annuals, native plants, animals and habitat for wildlife. We implement various permaculture systems to promote sustainability, provide for ourselves and provide food for others in our community that share a vision of a healthy planet. We currently raise Nigerian Dwarf goats for milk, we have over 100 laying hens (along with their roosters), a breeding flock of heritage turkeys, sheep, other poultry, and a few cats. We put our animals to work as a management strategy to build healthy soils. In return, they live a happy and healthy lifestyle on rotated pastures. We sell our farm products through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and online custom ordering. We have about 3.5 acres of alfalfa we grow organically as winter feed for our ungulates. There are always projects slated to work on. We have a long wish list of projects to complete, such as seed starting house, improved wash & pack area, a farm store, yurt build, and many more. We also operate two 30' x 96' high tunnel greenhouses for season extension. We have an endless list of fun projects and tasks which we will accomplish with your help. We are a small-scale, slow-growth type of farm. Expect to be intimate with the animals and land here. We wish to be very intentional and diligent in our actions.
The type of individuals we are seeking are:
Motivated,
Loves animals,
Values health of self and planet,
Desires to learn and share knowledge,
Openness to different approaches,
Wants to incorporate farming in one way or another in life,
Has a positive attitude.
Experience is great, but not essential. Teaching what we have learned is one of our passions.
Accommodations and expectations: We require a 3-4 week minimum stay and around 25 hours per week of work. WWOOFers are generally welcome mid March-November. We have 3 campers available, and a humanure outhouse. You can expect to prepare many of your own meals, while we will cook and eat together when it works out in the schedule, or at least once per week along with a farm meeting. We provide various staples along with the abundance of goodies the farm produces. We value both social interaction and personal space. Your own transportation will be needed. Couples welcome, children and pets may be considered with interview and approval.
Basic day to day operations will include tending to goats, sheep, chickens and turkeys (feed, water, milking), and making sure gardens are watered and tended. We often have special projects in various degrees of progress you will help out with. We appreciate volunteers that like to work as a team yet can have some autonomy and works well alone. We tend to work hard while creating a balance of work/farm life, relaxation and recreation. We are surrounded by beautiful mountains that have great recreation opportunities like hiking, biking, skiing, climbing, boating, fishing, etc. We enjoy these activities and encourage others visiting us to do so as well. We'd love to show you the local beauty! We are currently seeking summer help. Please inquire if you are interested in a more ecological and sustainable agriculture model and helping our endeavors move forward!
Your hosts, Nate and Tara are laid-back, easy going and patient.
Wellsville is located about 15 minutes away from Logan, which is home of the Aggies and Utah State University. We are just far enough away to be out of the hustle and bustle of the city, but close enough you can get what you need and enjoy some city life if you like. We are surrounded by the Bear River mountains, the Wellsville mountains and Wilderness areas which are beautiful. If you're interested in other regional gems, we are not too far of a drive to visit some of Utah's National and State parks as well as the Tetons or Yellowstone in Wyoming and Idaho. There's also some great hot springs nearby.
Organic methods: Low-till. Carbon sequestration. Green manure. Cover crops. Occultation and solanization. Sheet mulch. Crop rotation. Soil biology. Inoculants. High density plantings. Permanent beds. Rotational grazing. Silvo-pasture. Plant diversity. Livestock management.
Certifications: We sell direct to consumers. No need for organic certification. Our customers know we go above and beyond organic certification standards. Although, we will be working towards certification within the next year.

The fact that we had planned to stay a few days and ended up staying a week encapsulates the intoxicating magic of this place. This place far exceeded our expectations by way of the farm’s stunning setting, informed farming practices, fantastic people, outrageously good food, and excellent accommodations for WOOFers. Our experience on Tara and Nate’s farm taught us so much in a short amount of time. They are both so passionate about their plants, crops, and animals. It seems easy for them to choose to operate their projects with integrity and love and humor. Their energy is contagious. Our love for this place will be tucked away in our hearts forever. Did I mention that I highly recommend? Don’t hesitate, this place is it!

This farm was a great place to get hands on experience with just about everything! Nate and Tara have sheep, goats, turkeys, chickens, a wide range of vegetables, and an assortment of fruit trees. It’s a wonderful farm to stay the whole season and gain a range of skills. One of the best parts of my experience was getting to know the local community. Nate & Tara built a wonderful community network that is closely connected to the farm. SMF is truly “community supported agriculture” and their entire network made us feel at home in Wellsville.

October 2024
Spent about 2 months with Nate and Tara starting in September. I was looking to learn as much as possible about all aspects of a small stock organic farm including food processing. I was also hoping to make connections and friends. The experience exceeded expectations on all fronts and I am very grateful to Nate and Tara as well as the other wwoofers and friends of the farm who were exceptionally generous and welcoming.
I milked the goats, make goat yogurt and cheese and butter! I spent time doing ferments and canning and making sourdough. I made pasta using eggs from the farm and bread from the huge Zucchinis.
Accommodation was a small camper van. No running water and outhouse so it’s simple. Plus shower is in the main house.
We spent time building a barn and I learned loads from Nate and his knowledgeable friends.
The valley is gorgeous with lots of options for walks in the canyons and longer trips to national parks.
Thanks N&T and co!

This farm is SUCH a special place. I loved my experience here. Nate and Tara are warm, friendly hosts and I immediately felt welcomed from the minute I showed up. Nate is a phenomenal teacher -- this was my first time WWOOFing and I came with zero knowledge, and he was patient and eager to show me the ropes on everything: milking goals, planting trees, prepping seed beds, harvesting vegetables, moving ungulate fences, processing chickens, the list goes on. I learned so much here and going forward will carry both the on-the-ground knowledge about regenerative agriculture as well as philosophies around responsible land stewardship and life in general. The community that Nate and Tara have created in Wellsville -- friends and neighbors sharing food and truly looking out for one another -- is something special. I'm honored that I got to be a part of it for a month. I fully intend to visit again :)

Where to begin... ditto to all the previous 👍🏼 👍🏼 reviews!
I had the absolute privilege of working with Nate and Tara for the entire 2023 growing season (April-November). It was my first WWOOF experience and the opportunity to learn about regenerative farming here was beyond great! Nate and Tara have worked very hard to create a beautiful, full-circle, sustainable plot for themselves and their community. The community that they have helped create is unbelievable. Aside from being kind, genuine people; Nate and Tara create a comfortable, creative, and empowering work/living environment. There is a nice balance of interaction and personal space on the farm. Nate is an amazing teacher- patient, thorough, fully engaged, and a great listener. He is open-minded in sharing his experiences and when answering questions or explaining/ teaching others, he's fully present. The majority of my time on the farm was spent with Nate but Tara had so much to teach the crew as well. Behind the scene aspects of the farm that Tara shared with the crew involved vet care, food processing, cheese making, and cooking AMAZING meals for weekly team meetings. Tara is a great teacher and listener! I am so thankful for my time spent on this property and would 💯% recommend this experience to anyone who is offered the opportunity! Thanks Nate, Tara, and the SMF community for being so caring and kind towards those helping out on the farm. You ALL are amazing!

Awesome! An amazing place to be! The hosts are both great humans and provide a welcoming environment that is conducive to working, learning and living. Excellent food is provided for your own meals and there were some absolutely amazing meals shared with the hosts and other Wwoofers. Things I was able to learn/practice while I was here: High tunnel construction, pasture rotation (moving electric fence), slaughtering/butchering, tiling/seeding/planting of garden beds, caring for ~50 sheep/goats, ~150 Chickens and ~100 Turkeys, cheese making, milking goats, composting, etc. I highly recommend this farm and the local area is great for exploring, especially hiking/camping.
