Beautiful 17-acre farm near Corvallis, OR 🍓🍓🍓
Oregon
Greetings, a little about this beautiful 17 acre farm located near the progressive city of Corvallis in the verdant Willamette Valley of Oregon. This farm has been one of the few places in the state of Oregon that has offered certified organic u-pick strawberries, ….but not for 2024. I would like to spend this summer working on other projects. With an eye towards retiring, I’m thinking of replacing the strawberries with a less demanding crop. There's still 1/4 ac. of blueberries, 12 varieties of gooseberries, elderberries, haskaps & currents, an orchard, a pasture, a forest, a vegetable garden, a flower garden, and a shade garden. The last two mentioned could use some tlc.
My favorite thing about living on the farm is the animals (all beloved pets...nobody gets eaten here); two horses Buggy & Young Man, a flock of 10 chickens, and the 5 kitties - I do a lot of TNR (trap, neuter, & release). My foster fails - Beatrice, Penelope, Mario, Carmen, & Ash. 😻
During winter months it’s usually too rainy to do much outdoors, but in the windows of dry weather, it is time to prune the fruit trees, blueberries, and gooseberries. There is the regular chore of tending to the animals. It’s also the time I focus on indoor projects on the house and outbuildings. In spring the grass is growing like crazy and needs to be mowed once a week until mid June. Luckily there’s a super fast and relatively quiet electric riding mower for this job. The home garden needs tending, this is a time when lots of seed trays are being planted. Also in the process of mulching the aisles between the elderberries in hopes this will leave it maintenance free for the rest of the year.
There is a position I have in mind for 2024:
You are welcome here, experienced or not, as long as you have a good attitude. Vegans and having your own transportation is a plus. There is a lovely 16’ diameter yurt to accommodate you.
My general agreement with visitors is a barter of 5 hours of work, six days a week, in exchange for food and lodging, and what you get in exchange is hopefully learning quickly and
easily everything that I've learned the long, hard way and spending some time in one of the most beautiful places on earth (my biased opinion : ).

Before I knew about WWOOFing, I sought out a local farm where I could work-for-rent in my camper; some place that aligned with my ideals and could show me a wide array of skills I'd always wanted to learn. I found this farm and WWOOF at the same time, so my first experience was a bit untraditional in being a full year! We had different arrangements than other WWOOFers might have (at my request), but in my time there I saw how flexible and accommodating Alice was to all manner of people interested in the farm (especially willing to work around existing job and school schedules). She was such a character, very personable with the best stories to tell! There were a wide variety of ongoing projects to work on at all times from building to crop maintenance to animal care. I harvested wood, learned new recipes, helped with finishing touches on an old cabin, fell in love with driving the tractor and its various attachments... There's no way I could list all the opportunities I had during my year on the farm or describe the beauty of that property, a gem in the verdant Willamette Valley (and a cat-lover's dream!). I'm not sure I'll ever call any place more beautiful 'home'. I'm incredibly thankful for my time at this farm and to Alice for taking a chance on me! After my experience there, I look forward to WWOOFing all over this beautiful country and beyond. ♡

Alice was super nice to my friend and I while we stayed here. Was clear about the work each day and helped us understand how to work all the specialized tools! She cooked us delicious meals every night and let us make breakfast with the farm fresh eggs from the chickens. The farm is also lovely and in such a beautiful area. Learned a ton and would definitely recommend WOOFing here!

My friend and I woofed for the first time at Alice's farm in June. All of our expectations were exceeded.! Alice was warm and welcoming and set us up in a room with kittens that needed to be socialized for adoption. Farm work didn't start till 11 am and our tasks ranged from feeding the animals, weeding, mowing, cleaning buckets, building a yurt, and helping install an irrigation system. Alice is very smart and capable and the perfect teacher for those who are looking for farm education or just adventurers passing through. This farm was like a dream. Unlike the east coast (Boston) there was no humidity or abundance of bugs. The nights were cools, the sun set late, and mountains dotted the horizon. We were sad to leave and return to our normal lives.

This was my first time WWOOFing and I had a very positive experience! My tasks included feeding the animals, washing buckets, cleaning strawberry plants, and weeding.
Alice has a lot of knowledge about plants, animals, tools, machines, the logistics of running a farm, etc. and is always willing to share it. I would describe her as a little blunt but still kind and understanding. She made me feel welcome and often checked in about whether I had enough to eat and whether I was getting what I wanted out of my experience. Since I didn’t have a car, she picked me up and dropped me off in Corvallis and invited me to accompany her when she went into town.
The farm is a beautiful place, with lots of flowers blooming when I was there, and I loved getting to interact with the animals. I stayed in the cottage attached to the house, which was very comfortable and spacious. Overall, I learned a lot and enjoyed my visit!

While at the farm, I worked on several projects over the course of a few days including picking strawberries, harvesting pears, meal prep, and processing pears for storage. Alice was a good communicator of her expectation and needs on the farm.

I am a writer by trade, but am finding it hard to locate the words to describe my transformative experience at Fairfield farm. I was only on site for a week, but in that time, Alice was able and willing to impart so much knowledge about plant care, small farming, animal care (and care for animals - two different things), self-sustaining practices, sustainability - I could go on! If you want to learn, I encourage you to seek out Alice as a guide. She is so gracious with her mind and time; moreover, she always checked in with me to make sure I was learning what I wanted to/was most interested in. I think it's also important to note that Alice is largely self-taught which makes her equal parts impressive and approachable. I came away with knowledge, empowered to put it to practice while keeping in mind that farming/growing plants for mass consumption or for just yourself is a fickle thing and requires a lot of humility and patience. Alice has those things and more. This week changed my life, full stop. Thank you Alice (and allllll of the furry and hairy friends at Fairfield!). <3
