123-acre homestead in beautiful Humboldt County, the 💚 of the 1960's back to the land movement
California
It's October 2025 and we're ready for you. Our 123 acre homestead is nestled in beautiful Humboldt County, the heart of the 1960's back to the land movement. We sell firewood, have a modest orchard growing apples, pears, plums and other fruit, plus a vegetable garden.
(!!!) Before you send a request... Please be sure there is a clear photo with your profile or provide one separately. Please address the following points below in your response as cut and pasted generic messages are given lower priority. This is your first Wwoof assignment!:
• Please provide a phone number as that helps speed things up if we're interested.
• We ask for two references, as well--reviews on the wwoof site are fine.
• Do you like kids? I have a 13 year old daughter who sometimes like to socialize with our guests, such as at "game night." She's mostly here on weekends during the school year.
• It's important to be willing to take on tasks such as helping with building, fencing, hydrologic firewood splitting, digging, etc, in addition to gardening, weeding, harvesting, canning. Are you OK with that?
• Do you have a car?
• Vaccinations are preferred but not mandatory. Please state your status :-)
The orchard has 80 trees, 1/3 established and 2/3 which are new & need tending. Tree pruning happening this year (Fall/Winter 2022-23). Raised bed garden is about 75 x 150 feet. Jobs include mechanically splitting wood harvested from down trees, putting up fences, planting and maintaining crops (zucchini, tomatoes, squash, artichokes, lettuce, etc.), mowing to minimize fire danger, rattlesnake surprises and rodents, weeding, fertilizing, burn piles, and maintaining water lines.
No two days are the same. We enjoy integrating you into the community if you are open to that. Shelter Cove visits to my ocean home are in the offing. Office help and organizing in relation to my environmental and community activism is also needed but not required. We ask for 25 hours a week in exchange for private trailer and board. There is 1 trailer and 1 cabin with hot water and heat, fans, cooking facilities, and a cooler with ice or a fridge to live in privately and comfortably, along with high speed wifi. Accommodation has a quality bed that sleeps two (comfortable queen or full size mattress).
Short notice of even a few days or a few weeks is best. Advance notice of over 8 weeks doesn't always work for us. We prefer visits of 2 weeks or longer but no commitment is required. If it doesn't work for us, we'll give you enough notice to find another Wwoof.
We seek low maintenance, low profile people. You will be well fed and may order the food you want or shop for it yourself, mostly cooking for yourself in your RV's/trailer's stove. A facebook link is acceptable, too, even helpful. It's important to be comfortable with yourself being alone sometimes. This is not a huge wwoofer scene but you'll have my daughter, the tenants, the townsfolk, and me to engage. You have a library at your disposal. On your days off, activities such as exploring the property and hiking the Redwoods are great fun. Trails in Humboldt Redwoods State Park are <20 minutes away, The Avenue of the Giants is <15 minutes away, Shelter Cove is <1hr away with access to Lost Coast Trail, the King Range National Conservation Area is about an hour away, Redwood National Park is about 2 hrs away, and beautiful beaches where you can hunt for agate such as Moonstone Beach are about 1.5 hrs away.
We can accept pets, but ... We have 3 dogs and 6 cats. No heavy drinkers or smokers please, moderation is OK. We've had about 180 Wwoofers visit, some as long as 4 to 9 months, and five have returned to live as our neighbors and friends. We value the connections we make with our Wwoofers and the local community.
This is a political atmosphere and the owner is involved in issues such as environmental activism and schools, including through the use of music and film. The farm is run on solar all year and micro-hydro power in winter through spring. There is a back up quiet generator/inverter. There are 6 full time residents spread out on the land and friendly neighbors, plus my daughter and me.
Organic methods: Create organic starts, plant them in raised beds.
Current projects (as of Fall 2025): Weeding, fencing, firewood gathering and splitting with machine, some carpentry (putting new roof on structure), planting and growing vegetables, tending fruit trees, weed removal, blackberry reduction.
There are usually have between 1 and 3 Wwoofers total. We're looking forward to hearing from you!

Darryl is such a character & wonderful human. He goes above and beyond to check in and make sure you are comfortable. His description of the place and his unpredictable life are spot on. I stayed in a comfortable cabin w/ my own kitchen and access to the kitchen garden with tomatoes, squashes, corn, peppers, herbs, etc. I got to spend a lot of time with Darryl’s child and explore Humboldt County with them! I mostly worked alone weeding beds & planting starts. The other long-term tenants on the property are kind and quirky and love to share their stories. There’s some music, dogs, plenty of deer & turkeys to keep you entertained. The wifi was strong from the cabin which important for me as I work virtually. Thank you again Darryl for having me, excellent first WWOOFing experience. Until next time <3

Darryl was an amazing host who was generous in sharing his community, home library, groceries and environmental activist knowledge. His garden was abundant and I got to harvest fruit and vegetables for nearly every meal. My main task was to weed the beds but I also hung yellow jacket traps and did some basic carpentry.
We had some wonderful conversations about his days advocating for the redwood forest which I will take with me to my other climate advocacy endeavors. Thank you!

I am so grateful to have spent 1 month here! Darryl was a very accommodating host, ensuring I had everything I needed and buying the food I requested. This farm is beautiful and I’m glad I arrived right when rainy season ended so I could soak up the sun. The farm is in southern Humboldt County, an area I’ve never explored, and Darryl was eager to show me many parts of it. Whether it was Garberville, Redway, Shelter Cove, or neighbors’ homes, Darryl was great about introducing me to his world and his community.
On the farm, I did a lot of gardening, weeding, prepping beds, transplanting starts, watering, and adding soil where it was needed. I also learned about off-grid homesteading practices like hydroelectric and solar systems, maintaining the roads on property, composting, forest maintenance, and much more. Darryl has lived an amazing life filled with activism and protecting the environment–I even got to attend a workshop he facilitated on nonviolent activism.
I look forward to returning some day. Thanks so much, Darryl!

Darryl has a prime spot in beautiful Humboldt County, near the South Fork of the Eel River, the redwoods, King Range and the Lost Coast. Close enough to drive to town - Garberville or Redway - for provisions, but feels far far away from city life.
It is beautiful in summer, fall and winter. I was there for 8 months, sadly missing the spring, but I know it'll be gorgeous then too, as the fruit trees were just starting to bloom when I left.
Darryl is a kind and generous host, always grateful to have WWOOFers helping on his land. He will entertain with songs, stories, local history, forest activism, and by being a genuine force of nature himself. The cabin I stayed in was top notch. Very spacious, warm, clean, private, with comfy chairs and bed and kitchen space and lots of windows.
Darryl would frequently check in to ask if I needed anything and I always had plenty of food.
Every homestead is unique; living "off-grid" can look a lot of different ways, but count on being a part of, and learning about, the care and maintenance and improvement of some of the following: solar power, hydro power, gasoline and propane generators, springs, water storage, water lines, water filters, leaks and their repair, outhouse composting process, fencing, dirt road upkeep, care for orchard and vegetable garden and greenhouse, firewood splitting and stacking, weed whacking, etc.
Darryl and his dogs, cats, daughter and other inhabitants of the land are all wonderful and you will love them.

Darryl has a wonderful homestead surrounded by a beautiful redwood forest, with frequent visitors such as deer and turkeys. We stayed at an amazing trailer, which was hand-painted inside with stunning artwork. The compost toilet was nearby and super easy to use, with a unicorn painted on the door, which was always a pleasure to see. Darryl provided all accommodations and beyond, taking us to local festivals and introducing us to a community bound together by love for the environment and each other. We are super grateful to Darryl for all the experiences he shared with us, as well as the stories and knowledge he passed along.
