25-acre farm near Kentucky River
Kentucky
25+ acre farm. Not certified organic, but chemical free for more than 20 years. Rolling topography just over a ridge from the Kentucky River and directly accessible to a county road. Most area is open pasture land where a neighbor farmer is now going to be growing fruits and vegetables.. There is an apple orchard of about 60 trees (8 varieties) on one north slope. Otherwise, I work mostly on an acre or two of land where I am growing strawberries, blueberries, yellow, red, and black raspberries, cultivated thornless blackberries, pawpaws, figs, herbs, some vegetables, peaches and pears. I harvest fruit, potted herbs and fruit starts for the Franklin County Farmers' Market and vend there online for a Thursday market during the April-October season. I need help with weeding, mulching, pruning, harvesting (and preparing for market) - pretty much all hand labor from March to October.I would think a minimum stay would be two weeks. The farm has sheds converted into a small apartment with solar electric, solar shower, composting toilet, propane stove and refrigerator. Haven't figured out how to provide hot running water (hence the solar shower), but plenty of cold county water. Good space for one person or a couple. No public transportation, but large commercial district (supermarket, shops, drug store, movie theaters, restaurants, WalMart/Lowe's) about two miles away. Good area for bicycling. The capital city of Frankfort is about 4 miles away. I speak Spanish, but am not fluent. Can accommodate dietary preferences. WWOOFers are responsible for their own meals. I am happy to buy groceries of their choice and there is a stove and refrigerator at the farm for their use.

It's a healthy balance between individual tasks/team work. Deborah is extremely accommodating and helpful. I have worked at a lot of farms over the years. I can confidently say the bee hives at this location are well maintained and cared for. I was really happy to see that! I will definitely be returning for a visit in the future.

Thank you for letting us stay at Brooks Hill Farm, Deborah! We enjoyed getting to know, and working with Obiora, and learned a lot about Frankfort and the many farm happenings in surrounding areas. We built muscle and grit helping get the carpet up and out of the way, and enjoyed spending some time in the orchard. Will definitely keep you updated on our plans and progress!

It was wonderful to work with Deborah at Brooks Hill Farm.
The farm was beautiful and serene. Most work was independent work weeding, watering, picking, and helping to organize the farm to become certified organic.
Obiora was wonderful to work with and has a ton of knowledge!
I would be happy to return to Brooks Hill Farm!

Very good visit! I am a first time Woofer and Deborah was very welcoming, knowledgeable, and gracious. She passed on a lot of her knowledge to me and was patient with my endless questions. Highly recommend her farm for the ambience, the variety of crops and trees and location

I loved my time on Brooks Hill Farm. There's a lot of life on that land, and I really got to know a lot of the diversity by spending my time in the thick of it, working my way through many weeds to let the good growth have some breathing room. Deborah is a natural teacher and eager to work right alongside with you on a variety of projects the farm called for. She taught me tidbits about permaculture and agroforestry in our time together. The eco-cottage, as I like to call it, is just enough for what you need. I also recommend watching the sunsets every evening at the top of the hill, my favorite past time on the land. If you're looking for some solid solo time, this is the place to go.
