I am a small plant nursery located on the historic boardwalk of beautiful Seldovia, Alaska off the Kenai Peninsula. My husband is retired and spends much of his time ocean fishing. Seldovia is a remote village accessible only by boat or air. I raise all of my vegtable varieties from seed and use no chemical pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. I also manage several public flower gardens in town and our own garden in which I grow many vegetables. We have two nightly rentals as well as kayak and paddle board rentals. I am on the Seldovia Arts Council board which has many projects as well as a music festival in June. I am looking for volunteers March-October for any length of stay. Help with greenhouse growing, gardening, weeding, watering, planting, and running the shop would all be appreciated. I am looking for team players, there are a lot of balls that I juggle to keep things working smoothly from sweeping the floor after dinner to carrying a guest's bags up the stairs when they arrive besides the daily chores of the nursery.
I am especially in need of help March 1st through October 5th (writing in 2026). If you like to ski, March is great! Five hours of work is expected per day with Sundays off. Remember, it's the land of the midnight sun. We work hard but the days are long and there is time to explore before or after work. The kitchen is large and well stocked. We start the day at 10am and you are expected to have prepared your own breakfast and cleaned up by then. We take an hour for lunch which is often leftover dinner from the night before, again you fix your own. I serve a hot home cooked dinner each evening and we eat together around our large table. Help cleaning up is always appreciated. You would learn about a wide variety of plants, and I can teach you some gourmet cooking techniques. There is a space for yoga.
In your free-time you can enjoy kayaking, hiking, beaches, fishing for halibut and salmon, and mountain biking - all within walking distance. You may have your own room and bathroom depending on other guests. Camping is also available if you prefer. This is one of the most beautiful places you will ever visit. Our community hosts lots of fun activities, we have an active arts community, many classes, and outdoor opportunities.
March: Clean greenhouse of the winter storage items and prepare it to accept seedlings and pots. Germinating tomato, pepper, & flower seeds, transplanting seedlings to 4 packs, heat & move into the greenhouse, transplanting perennial plugs to pots, potting up tubers & bulbs from last fall. Processing merchandise that is arriving for the gift shop and designing new displays. Oh yes, shoveling snow.
April: Germinating vegetable & lettuce seeds and more flowers, transplanting seedlings, watering & tending the greenhouse, begin garden clean up, pinching back seedlings, potting up hanging baskets, potting perennial plugs, clean up potting area & prepare shop for opening May 1st.
May: Thyme gift shop opens May 1st, watering & fertilizing greenhouse, transplanting, designing & planting of deck planters, prep & plant veggie garden, cleaning up community gardens, pinching transplants, begin planting community planters & gardens, crazy busy.
June: Watering & fertilizing greenhouse and planting community gardens, continued planting of veggie garden, transplanting 4 cells up, weeding, deadheading, crazy busy. The eagles are abundant this month as the salmon are running in the slough. Summer Solstice Music Festival & En Plein Air Art event.
July: Watering & fertilizing everything, staking, weeding, transplanting, removing seed pods, deadheading, first harvests in the veggie garden and raspberries.
Aug: Watering everything, weeding, staking, seed pod removal & collecting, deadheading, perennial planting, harvesting gardens and foraging for wild salmon berries and blueberries.
September: Watering, weeding, seed removal & collecting, cutting back community gardens, clean up, and clear greenhouses, fill greenhouses with all deck merchandise to store over winter, garden harvested, leftover perennials to bed for winter, mushroom harvesting, crazy busy.
I use all organic on all our food production but I also grow flowering baskets for the community who expects huge flowering baskets like other nurseries provide. I do use a chemical fertilizer on these baskets to satisfy the desires of my customers.
No current projects except for keeping up with running a nursery, tending our vegetable garden and myriades of planters and hanging baskets, and of course our beloved community garden beds. Be advised that the only phone service in Seldovia is Verizon. We do have good wifi Internet.
Transportation:
From Anchorage, the most expedient way to arrive in Seldovia is on True North Air $230 direct to our airstrip. Call Ronnie at 907 952-2726 for information. His wife, Parker, will pick you up at Anchorage International and transport you to a smaller airport where they hanger their small 6 passenger plane, it is a great service.
The AK Bus Co 907 299-6806 leaves from Anchorage International. However, it arrives at the end of the road in Homer after the last boat going across the bay to Seldovia which requires you to get a hotel/hostel overnight.
To cross Kachemak Bay before mid May you must take a 6 person water taxi to Jakalof Bay on Mako's Water Taxi $100 907 318-4669. It is a 10 mile drive from Seldovia to Jakalof Bay and I can pick you up.
Starting around May 20th, the Seldovia Bay Ferry is in operation from Homer into our small boat harbor, a short walk from Thyme On The Boardwalk. Reservation are unnecessary except for holidays or special events happening in town $60 907 435-3299
