Aloha! Thank you for visiting our farm page!   We are located on the tropical Hamakua Coast of the Big Island, five miles from the breathtaking Waipio Valley, and consists of 64 acres of some of the most fertile land on the island. The farm is divided into two sections, with the back half encompassing 40 acres of fifty-year-old macadamia nut trees and the front half and campus section continually being developed into gardens, food forests, orchards with a diverse range of tropical plant species.  We are an education center focused on helping individuals reestablish their relationship with the land and host many educational groups throughout the year. We are not a production farm, so all the food you will help grow and tend to will be for your own consumption. The farm is run organically with a heavy emphasis on regenerative agriculture and the establishment of food forests and perennials. Currently, we have 150 Samoan dwarf coconuts, a citrus tree orchard with tangelos, lemons, limes, and oranges, and a variety of fruit trees such as Suriname cherry, lychee, icecream bean, soursop and star fruit dispersed through the property. The trees currently fruiting include various banana species, plantains, papayas, and guavas.  Other crops include a selection of vegetables (eggplant, tomatoes, green beans, etc.), greens (kale, spinach, arugula, mixed greens), and herbs, which are the basis of our diet here, as well as sugar cane, purple potatoes, and edible hibiscus. Please note some of the above-mentioned crops are seasonal. Please read the information below and apply for any of these positions at our farm. We are a vegetarian farm therefore, no meat is allowed to be cooked on the property. We have a no-alcohol policy. All wwoofers will be on a trial period where if we do not feel that is a good fit, you will be asked to seek other arrangements. Positive energy and good vibes are a requirement. If you do not want to be a part of a community where everyone contributes and enjoys caring for the land, this is not the place for you. Keep the drama to a minimum because ain't nobody got time for that. Show love for the land, and she will return her love tenfold.

Listening to the very charismatic Anu talk about plants, soil, and gardening is rewarding. She is both passionate and knowledgeable. Also, the fact that she gives farm tours to paying customers may help to explain why she is so compelling. The cabanas for lodging are quaint and each WWOOFer, or couple, was able to have their own, until the end of the week when a group moved onto the farm, at which time the WWOOFers were moved to large tents, like what would be used for a carport. During my stay, the farm was not producing very much food, aside from numerous delicious banana varieties. We did work on the vegetable greenhouse, so it is possible that it will be in production in a month or two. If you are craving fresh vegetables, there is a produce market open daily in a nearby town. You can borrow a farm bicycle, and enjoy the country scenery as you ride the five miles to get there. Overall, my experience was positive, and the best part was communing with my fellow WWOOFers.

I had a good experience at the farm here, the work was steady and mostly all gardening and the rest mainly in the community space socializing, resting and food. I was able to eat exclusively from the land during my 3 week stay, I experienced welcoming and easy-going people here and had a small cabin to myself, Though it seems the people and the accommodations may differ depending on the time you may visit, definitely a place focused on community and nature

A great place for a long stay. Annick is a very positive person, very interested in sharing her knowledge of permaculture. The farm staff are friendly and very helpful dealing with situations. The work is mostly enjoyable, and only 5 hours per day, although you can work more hours to take off hours from other days. The farm itself is beautiful and large enough to explore. There are permaculture food forests, market gardens, ironwood forests, horse pastures, a waterfall, a cave, and an irrigation canal you can swim in. I would definitely recommend renting a car while on the farm. It is possible to bike to Honoka’a town and the Waipio Valley lookout with bicycles you can borrow from the farm, but not many other places. It’s theoretically possible to get around the island with buses and hitchhiking, but both are unreliable. Know the nearest beach (or ocean access) is a 45-minute drive. Most food was provided, but it is nice to have a car to be able to buy your own comfort food. I would recommend asking questions before signing up. I assumed there would be many WWOOFers and that I would be working with Jordan (who most of the reviews I read mentioned). Instead there were only 2 other volunteers and a new WWOOF coordinator. I was upset for the first few days as I was hoping for a more communal experience with lots of people, but luckily I ended up bonding with the 2 other volunteers over the next month. A rental car split between 3 people is still quite affordable.

This farm is purely amazing! I feel really blessed that I was able to be a part of this beautiful place. Surprisingly, I only had two other woofers on the farm during my month long stay but I still really had the best time. We were working in the Food Forests, planted pineapples, did some weeding, planted ginger or took care of the coconut nursery. My favorite work and probably my absolute favorite thing to do in general from now on is harvesting bananas with the machete. It's so cool! After work we enjoyed the most delicious lunch with veggies, macadamia nuts and all kinds of fruits from the farm. The moment I came home I missed my daily snack: bananas with a looottt of peanut butter. With our rental car (the bus is extremely unreliable) we were able to explore the whole island and there are countless nice hikes, waterfalls and beaches. I am so thankful for this experience and also for the amazing people I met at the farm. Annick really enjoys to share her knowledge on permaculture and cares a lot about the farm and the woofers. The organization at the farm is awesome and I always felt like my work was appreciated - I really appreciated the positive reinforcement. Awesome place on earth and an awesome farm - I can only recommend! :)

BIF was the best first wwoofing experience I could have imagined, I have learned so much and met so many amazing people along the way. I extended my time here because of the comfort I feel in this communtiy and the things I continue to learn. I 100% recommend coming here to learn more about yourself + try to live a more sustainable life. <3
