Our farm is located in upstate New York near the picturesque Finger lakes and Appalachian mountains. The area offers museums, hiking, lakes, and cultural centers like Ithaca NY and New York City. We are 45 minutes from Cornell University which offers a wonderful assortment of agricultural/nature opportunities.   Our farm, established in 2002,  offers three agricultural enterprises: 1) Community Supported Agriculture  offering fruits, herbs, vegetables to more than 50 families;  2.) Nature Education Programs and Farm tours for scouting troops, schools, small groups and 3) Berry and Fruit tree production with a small but expanding edible food forest. The farm is very interactive with the community as we offer pick your own produce, educational farm activities , hikes on the Bluebird Trail, and opportunities for children to connect with nature in a safe environment. We have multiple conservation projects in place including a mile long bluebird trail; monarch weigh station, honey bee colonies and wildflower meadow. Our 2024 goals are to improve soil health in our expanding vegetable gardens; expand our raspberry and blackberry fields; continue to develop our Forest Garden, and continue to provide quality nature/farming activities and programs for our community. We are also focusing this year developing more pollinator friendly places on our farm and in the community. To do this, we will host community workshops and pollinator-friendly plant sales. We are integrating more sustainable farming practices and adopting ""climate smart"" farming techniques to meet the challenges farmers are facing with climate change. One big goal for us is to capture and store water through a rain barrel system, run-off ponds and trenches. Our gardening methods are all organic and we use "no till" garden beds, raised beds , vertical growing, hügelkultur methods and container gardening.   Other farm activities include food preservation classes, alpaca/sheep sheering and yarn production ( seasonally) applesauce and juice production and baking.   WWOOF volunteers  will assist with feeding and caring for animals, planting and caring for the gardens, fruit trees, and helping with children's programs if they are interested. WWOOFERS will have their own room in the farm house, or can stay in the cabin.  We are looking for a 2-4 week commitment and we will help with travel and enrichment activities to local museums, towns, and activities. In 2021 we are adding back ground checks for WWOOFERS who are involved with our children's programs and attend special farm events.   Organic methods: We compost regularly; we use no till methods in our garden beds.  We do not use any chemicals on our vegetable gardens and berries.  Everyone receives training in GAP ( Good Agricultural Practices)  We are Animal Welfare Approved for our laying flock.   Current projects: Developing the forest garden ( adding more edible plants) Creating raised beds using the Hügelkultur design Maintaining and improving the pollinator gardens Improving soil health through cover cropping, composting, and no-till methods Expanding the bluebird trail...building bird houses, clearing brush Organic gardening Community education programs. What a blessing it was to have my very first WWOOF experience at this farm! The farm tasks were diverse and grew my knowledge of the work it takes to cultivate a successful operation. Margie is extremely hard-working and passionate about the great work she is doing. My favorite parts of the volunteer experience were teaching the young kiddos about different aspects of nature and learning about how to maintain a healthy garden. If you are a solo WWOOFer looking for activities outside of the farm, I suggest Market Street in Corning (Bridge walk, great pizza at Anniello's, farmers markets on Thursdays in the summer, coffee!), exploring Ithaca (farmer's market, Buttermilk Falls State Park, Cornell, lots of fun food), and exploring the Elmira area (Mark Twain country, shopping, Elmira College). My favorite place outside the farm was Beartown Road Alliance Church where I met some amazing friends that welcomed me with open arms. Happy WWOOFing!

I had a lovely stay at Bluebird Trail. I enjoyed getting to know Margie and Bill, and I learned a lot about animal care and farm management! I could tell that Margie put a lot of thought into a great volunteer experience for the wwoofers she hosts. For example, while I was there, one of the projects was starting a butterfly/pollinator garden. Margie didn’t just have us transplanting and watering in the new seedlings, but we also got to design the garden and decide where all the new plants would go. She gave us a lot of agency and I really appreciated that! I also loved hiking in nearby Watkins Glen and visited the Corning Museum twice for several hours each time - it’s a treasure trove. Corning is a beautiful part of the world and I feel lucky that I got to be there in October, a beautiful time of year.

I had a wonderful time at Bluebird Trail Farm. There are a lot of different things to do -- gardening, working with animals, and working with the community in various ways from birthday parties to knitting classes. The farm is beautiful. I felt very safe and comfortable there, my living experience was also extremely nice. I would recommend the farm to anyone!

I had a wonderful time at Bluebird Trails Farm. Margie was very welcoming and the farm was beautiful. I loved the animals and the fireflies every night were unbelievable. We got long breaks and days off so the balance was really nice. I would 100% recommend the farm and hope to go back sometime!

Volunteering at Bluebird Trail Farm has been such a fantastic experience. It was my first Wwoofing trip and Margie and Bill (and Walter) made me feel right at home. I always looked forward to taking care of the animals every morning and afternoon. I learned a lot about animal care and working with them alongside children. Margie took very good care of me and made sure I was well feed and rested before starting work. The surrounding area is also so beautiful. The town of Corning is filled with cute shops and the Museum of Glass is very cool. I would definitely recommend Wwoofing at Bluebird Trail Farm.
