Summer is here! Come join us for this busy season. Contact us to reserve a place at the Hogstead table for 2026! Summer here is AMAZING and you will love your experience working with us this season! GENERAL INFO: This is a family farm producing organic vegetables and meat direct marketed to consumers and restaurants in the Seattle region. The 16 acre farm focuses on sustainability and integrating livestock and crop production. On-hands experience includes: Livestock:  Humanely caring for pastured-raised laying hens, meat birds, hogs, and beef. This includes learning general animal husbandry, animal nutrition, feeding, watering, housing/feeder/waterer construction & maintenance, deep bedding methods and manure composting, nutrient management, parasite control methods, breedstock selection, breeding, farrowing baby pigs, rotational grazing, forage/cover cropping, fencing, USDA and WSDA processing, on-farm slaughter and butchery (folks sensitive to this step of taking the animal from the pasture to the table you may opt out). Vegetables:  Variety selection for regional climate, greenhouse growing and building, fertilization, soil building, planting, weed control methods, harvesting/washing/prep/packaging, nutrient management, cover cropping, compost utilization, vegetable rotation, tillage equipment selection and usage, tractor operation, irrigation and water use, beneficial planting for pollenators, and organic certification and auditing. Direct Marketing:  On and off farm sales, CSA, farm product group buys, farmer's markets, restaurant sales, and online media. Online sales, packing orders, and maintaining inventory. Other learning opportunities include legal aspects of farming and selling food, rules and regulations, cold storage, construction projects (structural and timber framing/concrete/etc), logging/firewood, food preservation/fermentation, soap making, and an array of sustainable living concepts taking place at the farm. Solar energy production is now on at the farm and Hogstead is fully solar powered! FUN: Our farm is located near many amenities and beaches. We go crabbing in summer on the Puget Sound. A park pass is available to woofers to use at the lakes and parks close to the farm. In summer we float tube rivers, go on boat outings, go to the beach and river to swim, and go hiking. It is a short drive to various hiking trails and National Forests. We do a weekly (working) brewery tour in Seattle at our breweries where we pick up spent brew grain and drop off farm products. We also have free beer from the breweries available if desired. The farm roasts hogs in summer for large brewery events in Seattle, as well as our own farm party. Work Hard - Play Hard is the Hogstead summertime motto. Accommodation/Transportation/Amenities: Drop off and pick up to/from Seattle and other areas occur 1 time per week. Public transit is available near the farm.  Airport shuttle runs from SeaTac airport to a stop near the farm daily.  Everett airport pick up/drop off available. For accommodations, are two campers and a school bus camper. These accommodations are typically reserved in advance by a woofer that is fully committed to an arrival date. Plenty of tent camping areas are available, with tents provided as needed.  We have parking for vehicles, camper, or RV.  RV dump station less than ten minutes from farm (no dump on site). The farm has power, potable water, propane, large outdoor kitchen, and forest/wetland area to explore.  The kitchen is covered, with open air layout and has a wood burning cooking range, propane gas cooking range, two basin sink with hot water, refrigerator with freezer, food prep areas, and pots/pans, plates, and utensils. Kitchen camp area has picnic tables, chairs, and a fire ring. Washer and dryer available. Outdoor, hot water shower. Composting toilet and porta-potty for restrooms. For food, woofers get access to available vegetables, dozen eggs per week, and meat.  Woofers are encouraged to prepare their own meals, and cooking equipment and ware is available in the outdoor kitchen.  The farm does prepare group meals on occasion, usually once per week. Grocery stores are available less than a 10 minute drive from the farm. A farm vehicle is available to trustworthy woofers with valid driver's license. WWOOF required disclaimer here is that we utilize a rifle to dispatch our larger livestock at harvest time. We also sometimes partake in "Shooty Sunday." This is our occasional opportunity to hone our shooting skills at the Hogstead gun range. Firearms safety is a fundamental concept utilized in any shooting scenario. Whether you bring your own gun, or have never shot a firearm, you are welcome to participate in SAFE shooting activities. Over the years, I have found that this is an activity that folks thoroughly enjoy, learn from, and in almost all beginner cases find personally empowering.

Our time here was an incredible full-circle farming experience that we’ll never forget. We helped with animal care and witnessed piglets being born. We learned an understanding of the entire process of bringing pork from pasture to market. Luke’s commitment to responsible, ethical farming is inspiring. He truly utilizes every part of the animal so that nothing goes to waste. Pig skins, bones, and even manure all have a purpose, creating a sustainable system that respects the animals and the land. His pastured-raised pork is some of the best we’ve ever had, and the variety of handmade sausages, along with the expertly smoked bacon and ham hocks, are exceptional. Michelle does an outstanding job managing the gardens and greenhouse. Her knowledge of crop rotation, soil health, and unique vegetable varieties provides the community with an amazing abundance of fresh, diverse produce. During our stay, we also cared for laying hens and meat chickens, learned about daily farm operations, and gained a much deeper appreciation for what it takes to produce high-quality food in a sustainable way. If you’re looking for a genuine hands-on farm experience where you’ll learn, work hard, and leave with a new appreciation for regenerative agriculture, we can’t recommend Hogstead enough. We’re incredibly grateful for everything Luke and Michelle shared with us.

This was a great first WWOOF experience for us and we’d recommend to others! Luke was communicative and friendly. We stayed for a weekend and were mostly under the wing of longer-term staff and WWOOFers. Morning and afternoon chores included feeding, watering, mucking, adding bedding, walking the line, and collecting eggs. We also hoed compost into the field, flame weeded, hand weeded, prepped weed cover for planting, planted seeds and starts, and watered. Plus a crash course in troubleshooting electric fences. :) We learned A LOT about farm life and appreciate local food so much more. Accommodations were comfortable and the food was of course DELICIOUS. We’d be happy to come back!

Learning from Luke is an awesome experience. You will get dirty and learn the ins and outs of a real, working hog farm. If you are interested in small(ish) scale meat production and being involved in the local community this is a good place for you. There are ample opportunities to learn about animal husbandry, meat production, and the art of butchery. In addition to meat production, there are homesteading skills galore to be learned on the farm. There is a lot of compassion and love here and we are looking forward to when we can go back.

I had a wonderful experience WWOOFing here! Over the course of my stay, I was able to learn so much about what it takes to run a small, sustainable farm. I gained valuable experience caring for the hogs and chickens, gardening, composting, maintaining irrigation and electrical systems, and interacting with customers at markets. Every day presented engaging projects and new challenges that I tackled with my fellow woofers and Luke’s crew. My favorite part of the week quickly became travelling to local farmers markets to promote the farm's delicious organic products. It was incredibly rewarding to connect with customers and witness the meaningful impact that the farm has on the community. Luke is very patient and reasonable. He takes the time to explain every part of farm operation, and he’s always eager to answer questions and teach new skills. I really appreciated that Luke is not only generous with his knowledge but also respectful of boundaries, which made the learning environment and my experience overall even more positive. I would highly recommend a stay here! Come with a good attitude and be prepared to work hard. I would also suggest bringing your own camping equipment, as it will make your stay much more comfortable. Overall, I had such a great experience at this farm. I would definitely visit again!

I have really enjoyed my time here, so much that I extended my stay! It's been a great opportunity to work hard, eat good food, get stronger and learn tons about production farming. This is a business, so be prepared to work hard and be a part of the team! The work of helping provide high quality meat and eggs to a community is extremely rewarding and truly a special experience. Luke is an awesome teacher, he is knowledgable and generous in providing a comfortable experience to share the richness of this lifestyle. If you are okay with using an outdoor shower, compost toilet and outdoor kitchen, you'll love it here! I have enjoyed this adventure and I am very grateful to have found this farm
