Intro: Nettle Valley Farm is in the beautiful Driftless area of southeastern MN. We focus on silvopasture establishment and invasive species control using a variety of practices. We also are starting to grow certified organic native and ornamental perennial flowers for seed production. We've also added two mobile saunas to the farm and we host community sauna sessions and private sauna parties. The Farm: The farm is 90 acres of woods, pasture, pine plantation, ponds and fields near Spring Grove, MN. Projects are different every day in every season, but can include tending to the seed crops (planting, weeding, harvesting), removing invasive species like garlic mustard and buckthorn, splitting wood using a hydraulic splitter, simple building projects, fermentation projects, helping our neighbors with various tasks, maintaining perennial beds, and more. The People: NVF is run by Dayna and Nick. We're into simple but good living, doing work we love, and spending time with good people. Dayna runs the farm on a day to day basis and is into anything related to insects, saunas, birds, siestas, and learning new skills! Nick works full time as a remote programmer but is very involved in the homestead and business side of things. Nick is into playing violin, cooking up delicious pork dishes, playing cards, bonfires and podcasts. We love hanging out with our derpy dog Buddy (aka Budzilla). WWOOFing with us: Above all else, we are hoping to connect with WWOOFers who are excellent communicators, pleasant, helpful, and positive contributors to our farm. Bring your skills, we'll teach each other! Flow of the day: We ask for 4 hours per day, 5 days per week. Depending on the weather and activities, we'll usually work on projects together from 8-noon or 9-1pm then break for lunch. In the afternoon, Dayna will likely need to work on solo projects or take a rest (we love naps here!), so afternoons and evenings are yours for relaxing, exploring the land or the area! We often head out to do fun things in the evening (community singing, plays, restaurants, potlucks, work events on neighboring farms, etc.) and will invite you along, but no pressure to join in! When we're home for the evening, we'll share a meal and then play cards, watch a movie/show, or just chill. Accommodations: You will either have our tiny house to yourself or have a private room with a comfy bed in our farmhouse. In the tiny house, there is a compost toilet, hot running water for showering and washing up, and a small kitchenette. In the house, you'll have your own bathroom. Either way, we also have woodfired saunas, laundry, full kitchen in the house, a nice big porch to enjoy and a farming library. We're not set up for pets or children. This is a safe place to be queer / LGBT. What to bring: Long pants, closed toed sturdy shoes, sun hat, water bottle, clothes you don't mind getting dirty, and work gloves if you have them. Food: We eat simply but well! I (Dayna) don't personally don't eat gluten or eggs due to allergies (you can tho!), so we eat a lot of cheese, veggies, rice, ferments, and pastured meat. You will have access to pastured meats, staples like salt/beans/rice, veggies from the garden, and groceries like fruit/eggs/dairy/coffee/sweets. Breakfast will be on your own (always lots of food around) but we eat leftovers for lunch together and then make and eat dinner together (and clean up together) in the evening. Neither of us are passionate about cooking so we LOVE LOVE LOVE it when WWOOFers who do love to cook make dinner! :) The Area: There is ZERO public transportation, so you'll need your own transportation (road bike, motorcycle, car) to have a successful stay here. The Driftless is full of parks, trout streams, forests, and quirky places to visit. Spring Grove is a cute small town 15 minutes away. It has a grocery store, some great little restaurants, a couple of bars, a movie theater, an art gallery, a birding trail, and more. We love it! Decorah, IA is about 35 minutes away and is home to Luther College, an awesome food co-op, lots of bars and restaurants, and plentiful events. Rochester, MN and La Crosse, WI are both about an hour away. Contact: Send us an email with your favorite meat recipe so we know you've read this far! Tell us a little about yourself and why you're WWOOFing. Certifications: Certified Organic seed production Internet access available

A cozy stay in an adorable tiny home, with a lovely view out every window. Dayna and Nick were both kind, accommodating, and friendly above and beyond. I learned a lot about native plants, growing for seeds, silvopasture, and kicking the ass of invasive buckthorn trees! I say a toad in his hole, a wood frog, a skunk, a fresh monarch chrysalis, and of course Buddy and Kula, the sweetest and friendliest dogs anyone could ask for. Working at Nettle Valley Farms was the best possible experience for my first WWOOFing adventure. I can't wait to come back!

I had a fantastic experience at the farm!! Dayna and Nick are phenomenal hosts and were welcoming right from the start. I stayed for 4 days in their tiny house. It was comfortable, neat, and private. Each day, I worked with Dayna from 9-1. We tackled garlic mustard and planting and watering snap dragons and anise hyssop. Dayna is happy to answer any and all questions, farming related or not!! Their dog, Buddy, is absolutely adorable! We shared lunch and dinner together, Nick is an amazing cook. I enjoyed exploring Spring Grove, Caledonia, and New Harmony. Beaver Creek has some cool trails. Fat Pats brewery is a nice restaurant to check out, and the Wired Rooster is a cute little coffee shop. I was also able to visit another local farm and help out there. This was a great learning experience, and I hope to be able to go back soon!

Great place to wwoof! The accommodations in the tiny home were spacious and well kept. The food was delicious, Nick is a wonderful cook! Dayna is incredibly kind and welcoming, and she is very passionate about what she does. We worked on invasive species removal and native seed production bed prep. We would definitely recommend them and would like to come help again in the future!

I had a really wonderful time here and would definitely recommend this farm, especially for queer and trans folks looking for a welcoming place. During my five day stay in September I helped Dayna with farm tasks for four hours a day, from 8am to 12pm. We filled sandbags to weigh down tarps for future planting projects, harvested swamp milkweed seeds, lopped big weeds, and checked on the goats daily and gave them ivermectin one day. The goats seemed very happy spending their whole day eating invasive species as part of a plan to turn some of the land into prairie. I had lots of questions for Dayna about how she runs the farm and manages the land, and she was happy to share her knowledge. I think this would be a great farm for someone who who wants to learn about goats, prairies, land management, or native seed planting and harvesting, from a farmer who clearly cares about both the land and animal welfare. In my free time, it was very helpful to have a car. I enjoyed visiting Spring Grove and especially the history center there. It was also beautiful to just relax on the porch and admire the hills. Nick is an amazing cook and it was fun to share recipes. My bedroom was very clean and comfortable, just like being at home but with a better view. Thank you Dayna and Nick for an awesome visit!

Dayna and Nick were amazing hosts who were so fun to talk to and very helpful to us as first time WWOOFers! On the farm, we had a great time taking care of goats, invasive species removal, planting butterfly weed seedlings, and learning lots of plant ID. On our time off, she introduced us to other farmers and their farms, community singing, and nearby towns. We also got to visit Beaver Creek Valley State Park. We loved spending time at the farm and also with sweet Buddy! Dayna's farm is so beautiful, and we recommend WWOOFing at this farm 100%!

Awww Tian, we loved hosting you and Frank!! My favorite memory of your time here was that fun round of plant ID -- you two learned the local flora so quickly! :) See you in Miami this winter? :)

I’ve been privileged to spend more than week at this farm in the beautiful Driftless. I just knew from the web profile that it would be a great experience, but it totally exceeded my expectations. Tommy (another WWOOFer) and I tended to the brush goats, set up an infirmary for those needing a little TLC, wacked, lopped and dug out invasive weeds, and weeded and mulched the house garden. I also assembled an electric log splitter. Dayna is a force of and for nature. Nick is the sweetest guy imaginable. Their home is wonderfully set up for guests and Buddy the dog is too cute for words. I also got to meet many of their friends and family and get a sense of how fundamentally they are plugged into the community (Local cinema! Songwriting workshop! Community singing! Community theatre!). It was a packed week and a bit. Thank you so much! See you in Aotearoa New Zealand one day. Arohanui!!
