We are a small farm entering in our seventh year of operation, located in the Baraboo bluffs right outside of Devil's Lake State Park. Our long-term vision for the land (~20 acres) includes multiple enterprises and potentially future multiple co-owners (we are breaking ground in 2026 on a building project to house several of these enterprises). Our vision is to create a place where we not only can provide ourselves and hopefully others with enough income to get by on, provide the community with nutritious, responsible, and affordable calories, and most importantly do all of these things in the most ecologically-responsible way possible.
We think we'd be a great fit to host someone through the Future Farmer Program!
We are continually planting trees, establishing no-till vegetable beds, working to improve our animal husbandry, and setting up infrastructure. Brad is on the farm full-time. Eleanor works full-time with the Savanna Institute. Our main source of income on the farm is our vegetable CSA. We have ~65 laying hens and 11 hair sheep ewes (and 12 lambs (maybe more)).
Some projects that a WWOOFer might expect to work on include preparing beds for planting, transplanting or direct sowing vegetables, weeding, harvesting, planting trees, animal care, and miscellaneous building projects.
We are located a short walk and a shorter drive from Devil's Lake State Park, which offers a variety of hiking, swimming, climbing, and boating opportunities. We're also near several other gorgeous natural areas in the vicinity which are great for hiking and camping.
In general, we cook a lot of vegetarian food, though we're both omnivores. When we cook meat, it is almost always with animals we raised here on the farm.
We have two cats, so if you have allergies, it might be a problem. Eleanor makes a decent effort at speaking Spanish, and will try (and mostly struggle) to speak French and German. Brad speaks a little German and a growing but still little amount of Spanish. We have a decent selection of books on farming/gardening/green building that you'd be welcome to peruse.
We would ask WWOOFers to spend an average of ~5 hours a day, 5 days a week to working/learning on projects (or some variation of hours equally ~25 per week). In addition we ask WWOOFers to clean up after themselves for self-catered meal and take part in either the preparing or the clean-up for any shared meals (usually dinner). We will try our best to offer a variety of projects so there will be a choice of what you want to tackle.
We have two guest bedrooms upstairs and a makeshift "bedroom" in the basement. Second upstairs guest bedroom not shown in pictures yet, but it is same size as the one that is shown. We have a futon in there, which we can put a double-mattress on if need be to make it feel like a real bed :).
We'd like to have some sort of phone call or video call with you before your stay and at that point can discuss the specifics of your visit.
We welcome people of all nationalities, religions, races, sexual orientations, and gender identities and expressions.
We don't have kids of our own and have found families with small children aren't necessarily the best fit on the farm. Becuase of the animals we can't accomodate anyone bringing their own pets.
