North Carolina
Lives change and paths diverge and so it is with the Riverside Food Forest in California! Having been here since 2017, it is time to move on to bigger and better things! From a compacted dirt lot, I leave it a nature rich environment with bounty of food still growing and expanding.
This change comes with some great new adventures and the opportunity for those truly interested in seeing a homestead grow from the wilds of nature. This time in the experience will be near the coast of North Carolina on a 1 acre forest lot!
First thing you need to know is that we're not your average farm in any sense of the words! We use a wide array of sustainable practices and incorporate strategies that you won't find at other locations. Permaculture, Back To Eden, and hundreds of Sustainable methods are used here. With many techniques created here.
Riverside was the Beta Testing Site for many of the techniques that will be used to develop the new property into a rich and very diverse environment of health and learning!
NOW ACCEPTING DAY AND SHORT VISITS ONLY!
Set in the picturesque costal region of North Carolina, this wild, heavily brushed wooded 1 acre property will progressively transition into a bounty of food producing and nature encompassed paradise.
Focused on an agro-tourism format, with a Farmers Market, Backyard Nursery and commercial Moringa operation on the development schedule, this is a REAL example of what it takes to create an edible landscape and homestead. Hands-on experience here will give you a better understanding of not simply the work involved, but hundreds of techniques involved in integrating 5,000+ edible and medicinal plants successfully into a smaller space, with plenty of room for guests, backyard nursery, farmers market and Moringa operations.
Please understand, do to a lack of accommodations we are only able to host Day visits or those that are willing to camp out. If you have your own home on wheels, we are working to accommodate slightly longer stays in the near future.

I had a great time in Scotts' food forest. It is a very unique place with clearly lots of love and energy that made it come this far. We spent the days propagating mulberries and goji berries and Scott explained any questions I had. It was clearly a self sustainable place where the cycle of renewal and growth is emphasized. I learned a lot from Scott and he is a great teacher and I would love to go back sometime because there is so much more to learn.

I came across WWOOF by chance while looking for practical ways to apply sustainability methods to our daily lives. And did we get lucky with Farmer Brown! Scott patiently walked us around his property and educated us about some of the methodologies he's using on his fruits and vegetables. Then after some work, he treated us to his amazing homemade bread and Aztec hot chocolate! We actually took our kids (ages 5 and 2) with us, and I would say they had the most fun. Not only did they get to help with some of the smaller tasks, they got to make their own soil and potted vegetables! They're asking when they can see Farmer Scott again. He is a gracious host, a passionate educator (for both adults and kids!) and a shrewd entrepreneur. We can't wait to go back.

I had my first WWOOFing experience at Farmer Brown's Food Forest. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, I spent just one short day at the farm but it was a very educational and informative visit. Scott took his time to explain what his farm is all about and walked through his current and future projects. His enthusiasm for sharing his knowledge and techniques is amazing. I brought my 5 month old puppy with me and she had a blast running around and following her favorite four legged friend. If anyone wants to learn about how to create self sustainable landscaping and techniques involved in integrating edible and medicinal plants successfully into a limited space, I highly recommend this farm. I would love to visit the farm again in the near future.

I’m so grateful to have been able to work at Farmer Brown’s Food Forest. This was my first time wwoofing and it was a great experience. Scott is a brilliant guy and an amazing teacher. He is willing to put in the effort to teach you, if you are willing to put in the effort to learn. We did some hard and rewarding work, and it was awesome to see how much Scott has done with his land in just a couple of years. I grew up in the area so it’s incredible to see someone that cares so much about sustainability and giving back to the land and other people here. I learned so much and I cannot wait to go back!

This was my first time time as a WWOOFer and the Food Forest was the best place to start. Scott is a really nice host and I enjoyed each and every moment I spent at his farm. We had some very good conversations about farming, moringa, honeybees, spices, some nice business ideas as well. He gave me a tour of his farm and told me about various plants and trees he is growing there. Its amazing to see how he has transformed this place after he moved there. As a part of tasks, i did leveling of mulch and chips and started building a hügelkultur bed. It was a first experience for me and I got an idea of kind of physical work involved and my limits so soon I can start one of my own farm. Had fresh picks from his farm for a delicious lunch and he generously shared a lot of produce to take home as well. I am definitely going back there soon. There is still so much more to learn from there.

I didn't see Scott during my visit, yet Dan was a kind man and show me around the farm. It was a short day due to the hot weather, so a hat is definitely needed. Although it was a half day, I still like to go back to learn more about moringa.

Glad you found it educational. Though the expansion project in South Carolina pulled me away, I'll be back shortly, so feel free to drop back anytime!
Respectfully,
Scott
