Farmin' in Cajun country
Louisiana
i am a renaissance woman who grows much of my food on a small lot in a small town in south Louisiana Acadiana area known for Cajun and Creole music and culture and i play zydeco, r&b, and Cajun music with local bands. dancing is one of my passions too and i can teach it. i think outside the box and like to deal with other creative free conscious people.
i do most of my maintenance on my old cypress house property is always a work in progress. i am into sustainable living and consciousness work, art, music, foraging, kayaking, swimming, and fishing.
Your work could involve anything from gardening to maintenance chores, and anything that we want to create or that you are good at and want to contribute.i am an idea person and tend to generate projects and welcome assistance.
i prefer to work with someone who is an independent worker and knows how to use and maintain tools. i need people who have gardening skills, building maintenance, and a cleaner/organizer person.
Over the past few years, the universe has blessed me with a ""family of choice"" many of whom i have met by being a host.
Some of my dear friends have returned multiple times even bringing friends and i am truly grateful for the help and even more for the connections made with people who all seem to be related in some way:)
If we choose, your stay may be extended for any length of time. People have stayed for a year by mutual agreement.
i eat healthy, mostly organic whole foods and i'm a pretty good cook .i buy you whatever groceries you like to eat. i know about cultural events involving music and can show you the inside of the local cajun and zydeco scene. there are kayaks and bikes here and the lake is close.
currently looking for permaculture gardeners and or handy builder types. Rainwater to irrigation system is needed.
Organic methods: permaculture, organic , wild foraging. etc.
Certifications: dont want to pay for certification and the mosquito truck sprays on my street although they are supposted to not spray in front of my property. i use organic gardeningpractices.

I had a great time with Hogie, and I definitely recommend a stay at her farm. Daily tasks include watering/weeding the garden, composting, and cleaning up. Hogie tries to find tasks that you enjoy, have experience in, or want to learn about. I enjoyed my time here, and I hope I can come back someday!

Hogie was a pleasure to work for. Prior to my arrival her area had a severe snow storm killing many trees. Hogie had a new battery powered chain saw that I used often to prune down the dead trees. I sharpener all the tools that had an edge. Even the lawn mower. We had a similar love of adventure books and we shared our favorites. Hogie made the best salads all from her garden

We had a wonderful stay at this farm. If we ever lived in an urban setting, this is exactly what we would envision our yard to look like. Hogie does a wonderful job of utilising her space to grow tons of food in both traditional and permaculture styles.
Hogie welcomes you into her home like a member of her family and is very appreciate of the work you you put in around the property. One of the really valuable things we learned during our stay was Hogie's way of producing an income from her small farm space.
Hogie is wonderful musician, gardener, and now friend. If we ever find ourselves back in Louisiana we'll be sure to stop in again.

Hogie's place is full of wild magic and friendship! The garden is abundant with all of Hogie's favorites, lots of greens and medicinal plants. Hogie herself is an experienced host and made sure that I had everything I needed to be comfortable. She also included me in local happenings including jam sessions and a Mardi Gras parade, and gave me a great taste of Cajun Country.
I loved mornings in the garden, listening to Hogie singing in tune with the wind chimes, with a friendly cat trailing along and "helping" with farm work. She's got a variety of projects going on, so there are a lot of different ways to help.
As other WWOOFers have noted, there's something special happening at Earthangel Farms. Hogie has a gift for connecting with people and being open, and it was great to meet some of her friends as they came by and radiated the same warm energy. It was really a joy to spend time at Hogie's place!

Something special is happening at the farm, aka the Portal. In my decade's time of volunteering, I have never felt so appreciated for my work than being here. Even in the winter there is great beauty, and oh so much love. To put it bluntly, Hogie is one of the greatest people on earth. Her strength, gratitude, love of life, healthy work ethic, musicality, life-experiences, cooking, finessing the system, dance moves are a few traits that made me fall deeply in friendship. I really appreciated the self-autonomy Hogie promotes, and I leave with perspectives that make me want to be more intentional about my personal growth. What more could one ask for? Perhaps more succotash. And so I shall return. To future volunteers; be good to earthangel farm :)

Hogie’s place was such a gem.Tess found her profile on WWOOF and I found her on helpx. The fact that we’d both found her in separate places and had a good feeling about going to visit was serendipity. Hogie is generous, kind, and so incredibly authentic. She taught Tess and I so much in our 3 week stay there, and we were able to build a relationship that I’m sure will last for years and years to come.
She includes guests in the social events she attends, and clues guests into the events she may not feel like going to but thinks you may enjoy. She is deeply engrained in the local zydeco music scene, and has numerous close friends in the area who, like her, are beautiful and welcoming souls. Hogie opened her home and herself to us during our stay. We got to know each other well and fell into a routine that, had Tess and I not already had other plans, could’ve lasted for months comfortably. Her three cats - pumpkin, prunella, and Romeo are the most adorable fur babies you’ll ever meet, and her garden is a direct reflection of all the variety, care, and symbiosis present in her and whatever community of individuals happen to be there.
As far as work goes, she reminds wwoofers constantly that they’re volunteers - and is incredibly accommodating in fitting the right tasks to the person who will not only tolerate, but appreciate the work. Her practice of gratitude allowed us a space grow, feeling loved and appreciated for our contributions :)
