Camel farm (!) 🐪 in central Texas near Waco
Texas
Our ranch is currently taking on very limited numbers of WWOOFers and we do require our WWOOFers be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Our small farm is on 20 acres and is located in Bosque County, in Central Texas. The nearest sizeable town is Waco (120,000) and Dallas-Fort Worth are ninety minutes away by car. Waco has movie theaters, a few small museums, rivers for kayaking/canoeing, and a great city park with trails for hiking. Otherwise, Dallas-Fort Worth are the nearest major cities for cultural events.
On our farm we have a seasonal garden and our camels, sheep, goats, horses, cow, donkeys, chickens, dogs, and cats. We welcome paying groups to our farm for visits with the animals and for camel rides and WWOOFers would be helpful on these days in addition to daily farm chores.
WWOOFers would typically stay from 3-6 weeks and will be expected to perform 2-4 hours of work per day, 7 days a week (negotiable and very flexible).
WWOOFers will be given their own room and are welcome to eat meals with our family.
There is a small farm truck that can be made available to WWOOFers to run errands, both for us and for themselves.
No pets allowed due to the number of other animals on the farm.
Special diets can be easily accommodated (Halal, vegeterian, vegan, gluten-free, etc)
Certifications: Our garden is for our own consumption, not commercial. We do plan to expand one day to olive, pomegranate, fig, and honey production., but for the time being it is only for our family. We give away surplus to neighbors and visitors who come to the farm.
Current projects: Fence building, daily caretaking of animals, including sheep, goats, cow, horses, donkeys, chickens, and camels.

The words do not exist to describe how inviting, charming and friendly Doug and Trish are. They are the easiest people in the world to get along with and their farm was the perfect place to be for a first time WWOOFer. It's a very relaxed, loving environment and the amount that they care for their animals is unmistakable. I highly highly highly recommend including their farm as part of your WWOOF journey for a down to earth experience full of surprises and opportunities. As for the camels...nothing could have prepared me for how wonderful they are. You won't find another farm animal quite like the camel and Doug is fantastically passionate about educating people on this incredible animal and their place in history. If the Baum family had no farm at all, I'd still recommend them, they're just wonderful to be around and their home felt like my own overnight, but that they offer such a compelling and unique experience with such magnificent and majestic animals, you simply can't go wrong.

Doug and Trish went above and beyond my already wild dreams for this program. They were exceptionally friendly, accommodating, funny, and just the right mixture of hard work and laidback. I can't recommend these two enough. Doug is filled with exuberant charm, does everything he can to be informative about the area and his animals, and adores his wife, Trish, who is the quintessential independent spirit capable of doing everything life could possibly throw at her. It was a pleasure to help both of them, but especially Trish, because she is such a giver and works so hard to make everyone's life better. It's wonderful to be able to give back in some way. Doug really understands the teaching practice of encouragement and praise, and Trish has the patience of a saint. The farm itself has camels, goats, sheep, horse, donkeys, chickens, dogs, cats, and a bearded dragon. We worked with everything at least once, which gave me the chance to learn a wide variety of skills. Suggested: learn a quick release knot and bowline knot beforehand, and don't kink the hoses ;). They're about to change location, where they'll add a pretty extensive garden/orchard. I work online, and at the current location, I couldn't do video conferences but other internet things were just fine (w/ wifi; Att was good). I was able to park a small travel trailer there in range of the house/electricity. I felt so comfortable and happy around both of these wonderful individuals, learned a ton, and had a lot of fun!
