Our farm is a small 32 acre hobby farm where my wife and I are focusing on self sustaining farming methods. We have a small vegetable garden and a small apple orchard. Along with the plants, we raise laying hens, meat chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, Kunekune pigs, goats and game birds (we are hunters and we train bird dogs). We also have a 1 acre +/- pond on the farm where we raise catfish and bass for our consumption as well as for sale.
While we don't ever plan on being certified as an "organic farm", we do our best to maintain organic and self-sustaining farming practices. With a very few exceptions, we do not use any pesticides or chemical fertilizers on the farm. A large part of our efforts are going into soil restoration and expansion of our planting beds. We make extensive use of compost - some homemade, some purchased - to improve our soil. We are also very pollinator friendly. Approximately 1 acre of wildflowers make up our front lawn...we don't like monoculture lawns!
We are in the Oxford area of North Carolina, within an hour of Raleigh/Durham. Kerr Lake Reservoir and recreation areas are only a few minutes from our farm. We have kayaks that Wwoofers are welcome to use. Also, if a Woofer is interested in hunting/bird dogs, we can certainly introduce you to the world of dog training, bird hunting, and wing shooting.
Our accommodations are pretty small so it's not likely that we'd be able to accept children or more than one Wwoofer at a time unless your'e a couple. We recently built a tiny home on the property which accommodates both wwoofer and visitors, and there is access to your own bathroom, shower, and outdoor kitchen facilities. We've included several photos of our accommodations.
The type of work we'd like help with obviously depends on the time of year. Right now, we'd like help with some fence building, soil prep, animal feeding/watering, garden weeding/harvesting, and general mowing/farm maintenance.
