32 acre hobby farm focused on self sustaining farming methods in North Carolina
North Carolina
Our farm is a small 32 acre hobby farm where my wife and I are focusing on self sustaining farming methods. We have a small vegetable garden and a small apple orchard. Along with the plants, we raise laying hens, meat chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, Kunekune pigs, goats and game birds (we are hunters and we train bird dogs). We also have a 1 acre +/- pond on the farm where we raise catfish and bass for our consumption as well as for sale.
While we don't ever plan on being certified as an "organic farm", we do our best to maintain organic and self-sustaining farming practices. With a very few exceptions, we do not use any pesticides or chemical fertilizers on the farm. A large part of our efforts are going into soil restoration and expansion of our planting beds. We make extensive use of compost - some homemade, some purchased - to improve our soil. We are also very pollinator friendly. Approximately 1 acre of wildflowers make up our front lawn...we don't like monoculture lawns!
We are in the Oxford area of North Carolina, within an hour of Raleigh/Durham. Kerr Lake Reservoir and recreation areas are only a few minutes from our farm. We have kayaks that Wwoofers are welcome to use. Also, if a Woofer is interested in hunting/bird dogs, we can certainly introduce you to the world of dog training, bird hunting, and wing shooting.
Our accommodations are pretty small so it's not likely that we'd be able to accept children or more than one Wwoofer at a time unless your'e a couple. We recently built a tiny home on the property which accommodates both wwoofer and visitors, and there is access to your own bathroom, shower, and outdoor kitchen facilities. We've included several photos of our accommodations.
The type of work we'd like help with obviously depends on the time of year. Right now, we'd like help with some fence building, soil prep, animal feeding/watering, garden weeding/harvesting, and general mowing/farm maintenance.

I spent about 1 month at Maggie’s Farm. Each day started with about 45 minutes of animal feeding and care - goats, ducks, chickens, pigs. The rest of the day’s work varied, but Wight and Steve were always sure to give me options and asked which I was most interested in. Both Steve and Wight are very gracious hosts and patient teachers, always happy to answer questions and take advantage of teachable moments.
The tiny home and RV are both very comfortable, and Wight and Steve are great cooks so the shared dinners are really a treat.

Where do I begin sharing what a joy it was to spend weekends with Wight and Steve?!
First, they welcomed me onto their farm with patience and positivity, as I was brand new to wwoofing. Once they showed me the animals they raise, the dogs they train, the berries and veggies they grow, and the fencing projects they needed help with, I felt so at home and excited to get started.
Just a little initiative from me and willingness to learn things like driving the tractor, and Wight and Steve showed me how to get the job done, gave great feedback, and always emphasized how grateful they were for the help. It meant a lot to me knowing that I was making a difference on their homestead, and like all amazing people I've met, they were extra generous with their "thank you"s.
Steve and I created extra space for their pigs and goats with two fencing projects. I helped water Wight's garden and did some power washing. And I helped Wight put down wood chips, plant some bushes, and clean and freshen the chicken coop and goat barn. One night, we had a bonfire and that was awesome, under the beautiful stars.
They always had cold water ready throughout the day, we took nice lunch breaks, and a cold beverage was ready once quittin' time rolled around. The dinner meals they cooked were PHENOMENAL. (Too good to describe in these 1500 words.)
I left a piece of my heart there, with them in Cornwall, NC.

I had an outstanding time working with Wight and Steve on their beautiful property. They have a truly peaceful farm and were very invested in making sure I was having an enjoyable and worthwhile stay. The tiny home was fantastic for me and everything about the accommodations and the overall arrangement made me feel at ease. I really enjoyed my visit here and hope to be back through someday. The humans, animals, and vibes at Maggie's Farm are grade A certified top notch.

I had an amazing time on the farm! Wight and Steve are fantastic hosts with a wealth of homesteading knowledge. I loved fishing in the pond and taking long hikes through their beautiful trails. The work was engaging, and Wight and Steve made me feel right at home. The food was incredible! 10/10 would highly recommend.

Wight and Steve are wonderful hosts, farmers, and people. I didn't end up staying very long, but from the moment I arrived they made me feel welcome. They managed to explain things to me without being either condescending or leaving me floundering. They also cared about what I was interested in and wanted me to learn what I wanted. Not to mention the farm is absolutely gorgeous and they're both great conversationalists and cooks :) I'll always remember catching a turtle there :p

This farm is such a treasure! From the many creatures to share the love with, to the beautifully dense forests and fields of wildflowers, and of course Wight and Steve themselves, it is a place full of nourishment and Love. I had had a troubling experience at a previous farm, and they were so incredibly kind and accommodating, making sure that I was comfortable and heard. They really know how to whip up some delightful meals and spoiled me with certain foods that are close to my heart. Not only did I get to try/learn about many different foods, I got to get artsy and creative with Wight (who is a very talented artist!), have some great chats and heart to hearts, and feel cared about and my presence valued. I got to do a plethora of different things, from learning how to drive a tractor, mowing and weed whacking, sowing seeds, planting and replanting pretty plants, learning the language of our green friends and how to care for them, caring for the most darling animals, how to process and cut up a chicken, bake some delicious treats, didj it up, and so much more! The work really tailored to my interests, which I appreciate. They are very laid back and care for you well; when I wasn’t feeling good they let me take the day off. Wight even let me pick flowers from her garden and do a tribute to my late grandpa on his anniversary of passing. I am so incredibly grateful for my experience here and all that Wight and Steve have done/taught me. I highly recommend this lovely farm!
