Organic growing space located in the historic Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans
Louisiana
This is a small organic growing space located in the historic Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans. It is located 1 block from the scenic Mississippi River Levee and 1 mile from the Algiers Ferry which runs to and from the French Quarter throughout the day. We are a laid back operation involved in lots of community projects such as hosting a community fridge, having part of the garden dedicated as a free self-harvest area, and promoting alternative economies via bartering produce with several local restaurants, markets, and individuals. Guests stay in a private tiny house. We also have space for campers and moderately sized RVs. People of all skill/knowledge levels are welcome to apply although precedence will be given to individuals with prior food-growing experience. Day wwoofers and couples welcome. LGBTQ friendly.
Organic methods: Soil building utilizing food scraps from local restaurants.
Natural pesticides only.
Water harvesting.
Rain garden utilizing native plants.
Utilization of non-monetary economy via bartering with local gardeners, restaurants, markets, individuals, etc.
Certifications: I have not yet applied for certification
Current projects: I have many small construction projects on the horizon that I could use a hand with such as fence and patio building. Also I can always use a hand with garden stuff like prepping new garden beds, managing compost system, mulching, planting, harvesting, weeding, food storage/cooking/preserving, etc.

This is a special place full of amazing people, meaningful projects, and beautiful scenery. WWOOFing here was incredibly fun and fulfilling. Mark provides guidance and direction, as well as ample bits of knowledge, while still giving you autonomy and room to do tasks at your own pace. The work load is totally manageable and varies day to day. Housing was nice and comfortable. Overall, this is an awesome gig that I highly recommend!

Loved working at the garden with Mark and the gang! It is a memory I will cherish forever. There was plenty to do, but flexible. Expectations were clear, with pleasant wiggle room for creativity and new ideas. Meeting lots of people in the community was an unexpected bonus. Comfortable and safe accommodations. A++ experience!

Mark is an exceptional host, passionate about the garden and the community it serves. He is so knowledgeable. I enjoyed my stay so much and am humbled that I will be extending my stay by months. I love the gardens beautiful, thriving ecosystems. The accomodation is perfect and the location is the same, perfect. It's like being in a slice of paradise. This place is a labour of love and Mark is the caretaker of a truly sacred space. It's an honour to be a part of this project.

What a wonderful place filled with beautiful people! This garden, NOLA and Mark as host make for an amazing combination. I couldn’t recommend this place more if I tried. The gardens are accessible, the community is extremely welcoming, Mark is dedicated to making the time you spend at the gardens/in the city worthwhile and enjoyable and there is a pretty flexible schedule regarding getting work done in the garden and completing tasks around the property. If you’re looking to be in an urban setting while also working in and with the natural world, this is a great spot to do that. The wwoofing community is lucky to have this place and Mark as a part of it, I would garden here again any time!

I stayed here from Mardi Gras to French Quarter Fest and I can say that after some other workstay experiences that mine was above average, and i look forward to returning. The lodging is sufficient, the general vibe of the community around it is great, and Mark is a great host. He was flexible from before i got there but i committed to coming and staying, which is appreciated. He let me come early and pitch my tent for a week during mardi gras. once the hangover blues were gone we got into it. He’s open to other people with skills seeing a need in the garden and fixing/building/doing it.
In spring the volunteered brassicas and mustard greens are off the chain, and the loquat tree fruits in Mid April. There’s a community fridge that occasionally brings in good scores of mostly preserved/dried food. Mark is kind enough to get drinking water and other things the garden needs if you give him a heads up.
I didn’t have a vehicle but never felt terribly trapped. Algiers is quiet but the garden is situated in perfect sanctuary near the levee for folks who like separation from the bustle of the city. I borrowed the community bicycle to take the ferry and the 103 bus runs late from Loyola and Tulane NW of the French Quarter on the hour (pro tip: buy a day jazzy pass and screen record it live and flash that to the attendants/drivers who barely look).
