Our property is small and certainly does not qualify as a farm. The vegetable gardens are contained in two small boats, and the hillside is covered with perennials. No herbicides or pesticides are used on either. The location is stunning and the recreational opportunities are delightful for anyone who loves the outdoors.
Our projects include help with gardening (we are both over 80 and not as agile as we once were!) and other projects like painting, hauling firewood, brushing out trails, etc. Now and then we need help bringing groceries from the water taxi up to our house. I (Susan) am often here alone and like to know there is a capable person nearby.
We are located in Halibut Cove, Alaska, on Kachemak Bay across from the little town of Homer. Access is by boat only. Halibut Cove is a very special community of around 150 people. There is a small restaurant, a tiny coffee house, a few small lodges and cabin rentals. There are many trails on the island including one which accommodates four-wheelers but the half-mile trail to our property is a foot trail. People get around by boat or on foot if they do not have four-wheelers (we do not!). We have several kayaks available for use.
The Cove is known as an artists’ community. There are painters and potters, jewelry makers and photographers. I (Susan) am a writer and had wonderful a career that included work in conservation, post-secondary education, and healthcare. David is a published poet and spent his working life as a bush pilot flying all over Alaska.
This part of Alaska is stunnng. The hills and mountains are heavily forested, and glaciers hang in most valleys. We have eagles nesting nearby, and often have small black bears on the island. Sea otters and whales populate the Bay.
There is always work around the island for strong young people: sometimes construction, sometimes gardening, sometimes cleaning of rental cabins, sometimes splitting and stacking firewood, etc. I am certain there is enough to keep a WWOOFer as busy as they want to be. Some of the projects (for other people) pay modestly.
Lodging is in a small cabin with running water in the reasonably well-equipped kitchen area, a shower inside the cabin, and an outhouse right next to the cabin. The cabin has privacy; it is down the hill from our house with gardens and a workshop in between. We cover the costs of a water taxi between Homer and our dock at the beginning and end of your stay and the costs of basic groceries. Our WWOOFers prepare most of their own meals. We do enjoy occasional meals together.
In evenings and on weekends our WWOOFers will have access to the kayaks and will most likely enjoy the company of other young people on the island. There are beautiful hikes all around the Bay, and occasional festivals, concerts, and theater performances in Homer.
Our preference would be to have someone in the cabin from mid-May til mid-September but Memorial Day til Labor Day may be more appealing. Two people would be fine as long as they can happily share a very small cabin with one small bed. Children and dogs (no cats on the island because of birds) would be welcome also but be aware that the property is on a very high cliff above the water!
I will be the primary contact. I try to reply to emails every few days. I welcome questions!
