We garden over an acre of land in a suburban setting about 20 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. We raise a variety of vegetables, fruit, flowers, and chickens. We make jams and jellies from some of our produce. Then we sell a lot of what we make and raise at our self-serve farm stand. We also sell home baked bread. We sell some of our flowers to a local flower collective. We have another 2/3 acre that we are continually working on clearing and setting up for future farming. Our farming season is from March-October. Depending on when you come, we would have you help with planting, weeding, harvesting, packing products for sale, processing the produce, pruning trees, completing a green house, spreading mulch, and helping clear logs. If you come in the winter months, some of the things you could do are start seeds indoors, or organize labels for the farm stand. Unlike many other WWOOF hosts, we don't farm full time. We are a busy family with 3 kids. Both adults have jobs. So while we do try to spend as much time as we can with you, we will rarely be able to work alongside you all day. We are more available during the summer, but when school is in session you'll have more time on your own. The upside is that we are usually really flexible about your schedule. Many of our guests will work for a couple of hours in the morning on their own, go explore the area during the day, and work a couple more hours with us in the evening (when we're more available). We try to be very flexible with your work hours so you have plenty of opportunity to experience the mountains or downtown Salt Lake City. Guests will have access to our kitchen where they can make their own food and/or eat with us. It's not required, but it works the best for us when the guests eat dinner with us (it gives the whole family a chance to get to know them better) and are willing to make their own breakfast and lunch (our kids usually make their own breakfast and lunch too). We almost always have homemade bread, oatmeal, pancake mix, eggs, cheese, and fruit on hand. We're 1 1/2 miles away from a Trax train station (local public transportation), minutes away from world class mountain biking, and within 20 minutes of the Wasatch mountains. We're 3-4 hours away from Arches, Zion, and Bryce Canyon National Parks. Guests will stay in the basement. It has a separate entrance, a double bed, a TV, and its own small kitchen and bathroom. We also have air mattresses if needed for additional sleeping. Families are welcome, and we will do our best to accommodate special diets. We speak English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Our home would be ideal for someone passing through who would like to stay for a weekend or up to a week. Organic methods: We do a lot of composting, hand weeding, and mulching Certifications: While we try to use organic practices, we're too close to other non-organic residences to qualify. What you can expect by season: February-April Planting indoor starts Up potting seedlings Watering starts Feeding and watering chickens Preparing gardens for planting Planting cold hardy crops Pruning fruit trees May and June: Planting seeds and seedlings in the gardens Weeding Feeding and Watering Chickens Collecting and washing eggs Baking bread Maintaining the farm stand Thinning fruit trees Picking flowers and making bouquets July and August: Early morning an late evening work, as it can be very hot. I had a very educational Wwoofing experience at Edie and Jacob’s farm. It was only my second time Wwoofing, and Edie was very patient and understanding of my very limited experience and knowledge. I stayed with them for one week, and during that time, she showed me how to do a wide variety of tasks, to include things such as: picking, cutting, and arranging flowers for bouquets; how to make a wide variety of fresh jams; labeling product bags and jam jars for their farm stand food items; clearing a small corn field; and picking peppers (Jacob instructed me on that task). The daily work expectation was a maximum of four hours per day, and the workload for the overall time felt pretty balanced. Some days lots of assistance was needed (with even more than four hours worth being available to the extent I desired to participate), and other days there was minimal work to be done. Everyone in the family was friendly, polite, kind, and welcoming, and the sleeping accommodations were nice. I had the basement living space to myself during my stay, which also included a private full wet bath and an optional separate entrance, which I made use of. The food selection was plentiful, and the dinners were very tasty and fresh. And additionally, Edie was kind enough to extend the invitation for me to join her for a couple of social outings she had planned during my stay, and I’d elected to take part in a 3-mile mountain hike with her and some of her gal pals, which was an excellent workout!

I had the best time with Edie and Jacob. I helped with making jam, harvesting, and even planting native plants. They really made me feel at home and are very cool people with a very cool farm!

Edith Johnny and thier children were a blast and very conversational. I had a blast gardening in thier urban garden pulling weeds tilling and watering. At first I had planned on staying in my van but after ariving in utah the heat was much to hot and they were kind enough to let me sleep on couch. I arrived shortly after a stressful time in the town that had affected the entire nation. Getting my mind off of my phone and some nice ac after gardening and going on hikes and biking trips with the family was breathtaking in utah seeing all of the mountains. Their kids are really smart and well behaved. The family meals were amazing! Especially the chicken curry! 🥰 The house is big and beautiful and they have a little library in front of thier home as well if you love to read. 5 stars! Utah is the place to be. Just make sure you have ac if your doing van life in Utah. 🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Edie and Jacob were wonderful hosts! I felt like a member of the family during my entire stay and greatly enjoyed the work (including harvesting veggies, making jam, and prepping bouquets). My hours were very flexible, leaving me plenty of time to explore the surrounding area. Overall, a great experience!

We had a great stay at Jacob and Edith's farm for our first WWOOFing experience. They were very welcoming, helpful, and hospitable. They offer a great example of a hybrid model. They are great teachers, super gracious and knowledgeable. We stayed with them at the end of May, so we helped them plant starts/ seeds, weeded, thinned peach trees, and learned about how to cultivate healthy soil. Overall, we would recommend their farm for any first time WWOOFers or experienced WWOOFers.
