Local / day Wwoofers are desired to assist with herbal harvesting, processing, drying and making tea blends. Come and learn, have an intimate relationship with the herbs and take home some fresh veggies or garden grown teas.
Basic profile:
Judy and Ray are longtime environmental and community activists in Sacramento. They have an acre organic garden and orchard near the confluence of the American and Sacramento rivers.
Herbal tea and medical plants are the focus of this 1 acre private garden which we are eager to transition into a collective or community garden. We have a magnificent collection of pollinator and wildlife landscaping plants and the basics in kitchen vegetables. We now have nearly 100 herbal plants in our apothecary inventory, all from the garden. And over200 Flower Essences crafted in the past 12 months. We are in our third year of developing our knowledge and experience base with cultivating, harvesting, drying and blending with medicinal plants. We are not experts, we are learning fast and experimenting.
Our residential Wwoofer will have their own detached guest room (queen bed) and bath (shower & tub) with private entry. Kitchen participation will be in our home. Some meals will be shared and others cooked on your own with staples and vegetables provided. Judy and Ray are omnivore. Woofers share in cooking and clean-up of meals.
Jobs are expected to be weeding, composting, mulching and irrigation activities as well as herb and medicinal planting, cultivating, gathering, processing and blending. Gathering flower blooms will brighten your day, weeding with keep you grounded. We only host one residential Wwoofer at a time who will be working alongside Judy and on your own. Judy has a hernia condition so WWoofers get to help with the bending and lifting chores. We expect you to be teachable and follow directions, as well as take initiative and be sensitive to garden needs. There will be some supervision of other volunteers during work party events.
We prioritize WWoofers in herbal studies programs offering an informal internship opportunity.
Residential Wwoofers in Spring-Summer. We welcome locals who want to come help for the day all year round. Check with us even if the dates are blocked off for residential WWoofers.
Basic kindness and generosity govern our time together. No tobacco smoking on-premises, No heavy drinking or drug use. We expect you to respect our property and keep the studio, kitchen and garden clean.
No animals, No children. Couples possible.
Judy has been a Qigong teacher, Hospice chaplain, forest bathing guide, and spiritual director over the years. Her approach to gardening is to listen from a blended consciousness staying sensitive and responsive to the whole community of life as well as the individual plants and those who will be benefiting from their medicinal properties. We integrate a spiritual consciousness into the flow of our work. Instruction in Qigong can be arranged for separately.
It is hot here in the summer, over 100 often. In the summer, we work in the garden primarily in the mornings and evenings. In the cooler months, during the afternoons. Your studio is well insulated and has an air conditioner. Judy and Ray’s home is cooled with the naturally arising breeze and simple ventilation system.
We have bikes to borrow and bike trails nearby, a bus stop 3 blocks away, and are 5 minutes from the train station, 15 min from the airport. We are happy to pick you up from the station or airport.
When requesting a stay with us please tell us about your gardening experience, your plans for "off" time, and other skills.
