Organic Orchard on the Coast of NC
North Carolina
We are starting a mushroom and peach orchard on a 26 acre farm property. We may also do hemp and greenhouse plants.
You'll help us with pruning, planting, maintenance, irrigation, harvesting, cleaning grounds, clearing, building & improving structures (carpentry, trenching, land maintenance).
We have AirBnB rooms available near the farm on family land, two shared spaces furnished, with HVAC, 5 beds, and internet, and a guest cottage on the farm (a converted tobacco barn apartment), with 3 beds, wall ACs and space heaters. We will dine together occasionally, and place food in refrigerators for our WWOOFers to eat and share.
A typical day starts early 630-730; you'll meet a project leader, go over the day plan, then work on a current project (e.g., planting the orchard, maintaining a building, fixing up a shed, cleaning an area, repair or grease a tractor, clearing land); we'll break at lunch and the rest of the day is off for our WWOOFers. Sometimes we may want to work a full day and give WWOOFers the next day off so they can explore the town, nearby beaches or tourist sites.
Expect willingness to work hard and get hands dirty, fun attitude, and good people. We have pets, so you should like dogs, cats, and chickens.
We are musicians and artists. We love hosting family get-togethers and music festivals up at the farm. We have surfboards and bicycles available to WWOOFers for use at nearby Wrightsville Beach. You can also swim and kayak on the Cape Fear River across the road from the farm at Riverside Park.
Eight miles away is historic downtown Wilmington, where you can take in world class live entertainment and visit WWII era Battleship USS North Carolina and star gaze at the Film & TV studies.
People (like us!) enjoy walking our area's nature preserves, including the carnivorous plant park, Carolina Beach State Park, Fort Fisher and the NC Aquarium.
There's also sporty area fun to be had around here like mountain biking, disc golf, parasailing, indoor and outdoor skydiving, sailing, and oceanic fishing.
Come stay with us!

I had a great time at Marcus's farm. I acquired a wide range of valuable skills during my stay. Had an amazing time exploring Wilmington and the culture, and the great people. The work was very fulfilling and was a lot of fun. I will always remember this experience for the rest of my life.

My time here was delightful and rewarding. Helping with the chicks and other chores was a pleasure, not work. Enjoyed mealtime discussions and the company ... hope to revisit whenever I pass through the area again. Blessings on you Marcus and Jane.

Our stay with Marcus went very well. Despite our plans being very spontaneous we only had one minor problem with the planning of meals at the beginning, which we got to resolve quickly. After the initial getting used to each other everything went flawlessly and we even got to spontaneously extend our stay by a week.
Marcus has a variety of projects, so that volunteers with different interests and talents can always find something that fits them best. We had very engaging conversations about a multitude of topics due to a broad overlap of hobbies and interests. Outside of work he also greatly improved our stay, by giving us tipps and supporting us in our plans for activities.
We are very grateful for the time we got to spend here and thankful for all the opportunities we got.
