Zuzu and I started 4 years ago with the vision of harmonizing our natural environment with food production. We wanted to grow perennial food-crops for human consumption while also improving wildlife habitat as well as soil quality. Wendell Berry, J. Russell Smith, Mark Shepard, Masanobu Fukuoka and Joel Salatin are our main inspirations. Summer 2023 was our first season in production. Last year we sold shiitake mushrooms from oak logs we inoculated the prior year, as well as honey, strawberries, raspberries, flowers, and surplus vegetables from our garden. We have a small fruit orchard planted (40 apple trees planted in spring 2022), blueberries (330 plants, 2022) a decent size raspberry planting (2022) a hillside full of hazelnuts (2023) and a growing shiitake yard (2022). Last fall we installed a kiwiberry vineyard. Other than our beehives, we no longer keep any animals, although we are considering some grazing geese for this season. We have 2 open acres where our home is located where all our fruit and nut trees are, adjacent to 9 acres of forest. We have an additional 20 acre wood lot up the hill where we cut logs for shiitake production, however the contiguous forest is hundreds of acres in size. Work for WWOOOFers: In late March and early April we can use some extra manpower to help inoculate mushroom logs. We will cut those logs and collect them earlier in the month, but you would help drill holes, inject mushroom spawn, and wax over the holes. This will involve a lot of heavy lifting, the logs, called “bolts”, are 40” long and can be up to 10” in diameter so se weigh over fifty pounds. Last year we did 600 bolts of shiitake, combtooth and lion’s mane, this year probably aiming for 500. We have an enormous house with plenty of extra bedrooms. We typically rent out the house once a month for about a week on Airbnb, during which we move out to our cabin down the hill. A WWOOFer staying with us could either live in the cabin or in the house with us. The calendar is updated to reflect dates with no Airbnb groups on site. We love to cook and would enjoy to provide family style dinners daily, and for a longer stay woofer it would be fun to have you get in the cooking rotation as well. You will not go hungry with us, guaranteed. Breakfast and lunch would be staple ingredients (oatmeal, eggs, salad greens tuna bread etc), and you’d have access to our kitchen, as well as a camp stove at the cabin. Zuzu and I love to play outdoors. One of the main reasons we started a farm was so we wouldn’t have to “go to work”. We prioritize getting out for daily runs, bike rides, or paddles on local lakes. From our guest, we would expect about 5 hours a day for 4 or 5 days a week. We want you to be able to explore this wonderful place we call home, either with us or solo. We’d love to take you to all our favorite mountains up north, lend you bikes, kayaks, or camping gear so you can get out there and play when you’re not working the land here.

Everything was great! Philip and Zuzu were kind and patient, the work load was very chill and the projects they have going on are very interesting, everything from foresting to mushroom farming, to maple sap harvesting, to bee-keeping stuff! Accomodation was excellent, very comfortable and clean, the house is big and beautiful, they have a huge library too! Would recommend 100%

Phil and Zuzu were amazing hosts! Their property is stunning and so thoughtfully taken care of. They live so intentionally and it is very inspiring to spend time with them. I came during the end of winter and even without the blooming trees and bushes filled with berries the property was still so calming and beautiful. I helped with inoculating the logs with mushroom spores and it was a very interesting and fun project to work on. I chose to stay in the off-grid cabin and it was an amazing experience - I wish I could stay there longer. Chopping my own wood for the wood fire stove was such a rewarding experience and made the fires I had much more deserved. If I could, I would live in that cabin. I took a 3 hour hike around the property and it began snowing which was such a beautiful view. This is great opportunity with amazing hosts and a beautiful space - don’t think twice!

Phil and Zuzu are some of the kindest and most generous people I've had the pleasure of meeting! This was my first WWOOF, and Phil and Zuzu were nothing but patient with all of my questions and inexperience. It was interesting to hear about how they prepared their sloped land for farming, as well as their forest management practices. I went during winter season. The work included drilling holes in logs, innoculating logs with mushroom spawn, stacking the mushroom logs, chipping wood, and hauling firewood. The hosts switched the tasks around pretty often, so it did not become monotonous. I signed up to do farm work, but they kept on encouraging me to stop working and go explore the surroundings, which I'm very thankful for because the area surrounding the main farm is gorgeous! There are small trails around the house and babbling streams. I would love to come back again during the warmer months when everything is green. Accommodations were fantastic. The house I stayed in is very clean and spacious, and the food was simple, delicious, and nourishing. I was never cold or hungry while I was there. Thank you for the great first WWOOFing experience.

I had a great time at the farm. Our task was to inoculate logs with Lion Mane spores. I'd never done that before, but Zuzu and Phillip were knowledgeable and taught me the a lot! The farm was cool, the house and accommodations were great, and they were very accommodating to my dietary needs, which I was very grateful for. Thank you for a really great first woofing experience!

An absolutely lovely place with gracious hosts and enchanting woodland trails, accompanied by the ever-babbling stream which runs alongside mossy, stone walls. I very much enjoyed my time working and staying here and will surely be back again.

I had a wonderful week working with Phil and Zuzu on their farm. It's a beautiful place built on two acres of gently sloping fields that are planted with a variety of crops, surrounded by woods and close to nearby lakes and streams. They were both so welcoming and the week included a nice mix of work and play. Some of the projects I worked on included improving the mushroom yard, building braces for the trellises that support the kiwi berries, cleaning up the water emitters for the irrigation system, reorganizing several of the compost piles, weeding the hazelnuts, kiwis, raspberries and blueberries, and moving mobile electric fences so the chickens, ducks and sheep could have fresh pasture. During the week Phil and I went on five kayak trips to local lakes and streams, some just a stone throw away from the farm, and Zuzu and I spent an entire day hiking in the White Mountains. Their home is very nice and includes a large outdoor pool where I spent several nice afternoons relaxing after a hard day of work. They are both excellent cooks and prepared many tasty meals, often with produce from the kitchen-garden and farm. I always looked forward to dinner time. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the farm and look forward to visiting them again in the future for another week of farming, outdoor play, great meals and good company in a fantastic setting.
