Hello! My name is Trish, my partner, Jeremy and I live at and manage this farm - a small, mixed vegetable farm in Spearfish Valley. We have a super sweet dog named Miga. We raise a variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers, and fruits primarily for a CSA, as well as for an on-farm farm stand, and a local natural foods store. In previous years we've pastured lambs, and typically have chickens and ducks (for meat and eggs), but this year we are taking a break from poultry and reassessing feed supplies and our sales & marketing. The farm is 3 acres, with about 1 acre in vegetables and 1 acre in fruit trees/pasture. We work mostly by hand and make deliveries by bicycle. We began farming on this property in 2012.
WWOOFers will engage in seasonal tasks ranging from soil blocking and seeding for spring and summer successions, weeding and bed prep throughout the growing season, seed collection and cleaning in the fall/winter. There are also daily chores, CSA and market harvests. A typical day for a WWOOFer would likely be breakfast together, then out to the field or greenhouse for the morning, lunch together and then the afternoon off to rest or explore Spearfish and the Northern Black Hills on your own. Weather here can be unpredictable and our schedule of daily to-dos varies a lot with the forecast.
We have a small guest house available (full bed, bathroom with shower, kitchenette (toaster oven & electric kettle, no stove)). WWOOFers are welcome to join us for meal prep and feasting, breakfast, lunch and dinner. We eat seasonal meals, primarily (but not strictly) vegetarian. Otherwise, we are close to two natural food stores, a larger grocery store, and folks are welcome to use our kitchen too.
Jeremy is a bird watcher and volunteers at the local community bicycle collective, he's also interested in woodworking and insects, and learning more about electronic beat making. I like making block prints and clothes and am learning more about water coloring. We both have traveled a fair amount (before we started farming), are learning Spanish, enjoy year-round swimming in Spearfish Creek, are enthusiastic about bicycles and scheming up fun community celebrations around food and bicycles and seeds.
