Organic Self-Sustainable homestead
Michigan
Hello WWOOFers! My name is McKayla I am 24 and I run this Homestead near Port Huron. I bought this 113 year old property about a year ago, It has been my dream to become as self-sustainable as possible and slowly but surely I am getting there! I currently have 3 dogs, Alaska, ranger, and scout, 9 barn cats, 4 goats named Miss Moo, Gazelle, Heidi, and Tiny Tina, and 1 pig named Timmy. We are also getting 3 sheep soon.
My daily activities right now include putting up fencing for future and current animals, weeding, planting flowers, haying our back fields, general maintenance around the farm (all of the buildings are old and need love) and taking care of the animals. I am hoping to get a pumpkin patch in this year. We harvest hay on this farm which is an activity completely dependent on weather but if hay is being done during your stay tht would be the main focus. I am also hoping to renovate an older camper to turn it into a year-round place to stay for future WWOOFers. I am a first-generation farmers so I am wanting to host people that are willing to learn along with me or have knowledge to share with me as well.
I am currently offering lodging through camping. I have a few extra tents, air mattresses, a cot, and extension cords for power if needed.
we eat dinner together, typically some type of pasta and meat. Breakfast and lunch are more on our own, I will provide the food and the means to prepare it such as eggs, toast, sandwiches, fruit, veggies, and meats. I am pretty laid back when it comes to offering meals, I don't mind sharing what is in our kitchen within respectful means :)
I have a pond that I was told is STOCKED with fish, once the fields are hayed I would be able to go to the back part of the property to fish, hike, hunt and whatever else you could do on an open 15 acres. 15 minutes away is Port Huron where you can boat, kayak, hang out by the water, go to some fancy restaurants, bowling, putt-putt, and many parks and trails. Some hobbies at home for me include crafting, yoga, board and card games, roller blading, music, working-out, reading, and family time by the camp fire.

This was my first WWOOF experience and it was super rewarding and enjoyable. Mckayla is such a lovely person who is so down to earth and welcoming. She was super easy going and I had so much fun meeting all her animals, who are seriously the most friendly and cuddly guys I've ever met. The work I did on the farm was super enjoyable, I did some of the basic animal care that I was comfortable with by myself, and then Mckayla and I tackled bigger projects together. The camper was available, so I stayed in there and it was super spacious and comfortable. We ate dinners together and they were all delicious. Overall such a great experience that I could not recommend enough, I will definitely be back with friends and family to share in the love for this beautiful farm!

Our time at Mckayla’s farm has been a wonderful first WWOOFing experience! What began as a short stay naturally evolved into a longer one, as we extended beyond our original dates and are even returning because it’s been such a great fit for us.
From the start, we felt at home with the farm’s vibe. We were greeted by baby chicks born that day, the friendliest donkeys imaginable, playful goats, barn cats we wished we could take home, and three impressive Livestock Guardian Dogs.
Mckayla is an outstanding host - organized, communicative, and genuinely respectful. She creates an atmosphere where you feel both competent and appreciated, making it easy to enjoy the work and feel part of something meaningful.
We took part in a wide range of projects: building compost structures from pallets, assisting with chicken processing (and the resulting meals), attending a livestock auction, erecting privacy fencing, driving the tractor, enjoying bonfires, removing burrs from young sheep, training LGDs, cleaning and organizing the equipment barn, digging a new septic system, repairing electric fencing, apple picking, and daily feeding and tending of all the animals.
This is an ideal WWOOFing opportunity for anyone who enjoys hands-on farm life, appreciates both structure and independence, and values working alongside someone who truly cares for her land and animals.

We had a great experience as a family (two adults / two teens) for our first time WWOOFing. McKayla and her family were very kind and welcoming - we had a wonderful time.
We got to learn a good bit about farming including hay growth/harvesting and interact with all their animals including friendly goats (say hi to Tiny Tina!), the cute sheep (super shy), the fun new donkeys (and goat that thinks they're a donkey), the little dog, big dogs, and many chickens.
We were planning to stay in tents, but they brought out a trailer, which worked out great for when it rained briefly.
They had plenty of projects around the farm that we could work on, so we were able to pick out the things we wanted to work on and have fun getting them done. A great balance of flexibility working through projects with guidance and direction when needed. We all enjoyed and are looking forward to returning!
