My name is Marty. I grow Cannabis once a year, under the Sun, in the Soil, and with my Soul! The Farm motto is, "Plants By The Moon With Sun, Soil, & Soul!" The Farm is located in Eastern Mendocino County, just outside of Covelo/Round Valley, in the southeast area. In a South to Southeast facing beautiful location called, Pigeon Ridge, looking out towards the National Forest. They is a flock of chickens, for farm fresh eggs and fresh manure. There are also 2 barn cats, one is called Canna Nanna and her furry friend is named Rooty, both are females. They patrol the premises and all the gardens. I will be around the Farm, and I have some local helpers for certain projects during the season.
Taking care of the Chicken is always fun, and I use their manure to build the compost pile. Another project is always turning the compost piles. I also build hedgerows, windrows, and swales in the off season. I make Biochar and use that for the garden areas. I have begun to build more hugel mounds. They allow me to clear up the nearby forest debris and to do fire abatement. I have a working daily, weekly, and monthly SOPs document, which can be updated and changed as needed. I am working on several garden projects, including planting more in the Insectaries and prepping for Winter and Spring of 2025. The Farm is off-grid, and has a permitted solar project, so learning about batteries and basic solar equipment and maintenance is important. Very important to learn the water system for the gardens, they always need minor fixes, changes, and upgrades. The property has a permitted well. There is also a permitted septic.
The Farm has many amenities. There is an on-demand hot water heater for an outside shower and washing machine, and there is also a propane dryer. There is another on demand hot water heater in the outdoor kitchen. I have a 2 burner stove and barbq grill. I keep the freezers stocked and the refrigerators full. Simple breakfast, lunch is usually the big meal, then a simple dinner. There are several RVs onsite. There is also a brand new small room, I built. I specifically built it for hosting a WWOOFer. The room is built inside an old army tent. It is dry, safe, and has a door and window. There is wifi satellite on the Farm. There is also a 10"x 12" with a concrete floor, and insulated walls, it is another nice small room, no window though. I have had friends and helpers also bring there own camping gear, and set up a tent in cozy spot for themselves.
Mendocino County is quite beautiful. Weed, Wine, Waves, and Wilderness. There is plenty to do from Hopland to Leggett. The world renowned Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens in Ft. Bragg is a site to see. The Famous Skunk Train in Willits, what a ride. The City Of Ten Thousand Buddhas in Talmage, just outside of Ukiah, is an incredible Monastery. Some of the original Organic Wineries in California are in Mendocino County. Frey Vineyards, which is actually the first Organic Winery in America and Mendocino County, along with Barr Of Mendocino, Bonterra, Comptche Ridge and more are all pioneers in the Organic Wines. Terra Savia Winery is not only an organic winery but also a working olive mill, native plant nursery, art gallery, and has a menagerie of rescue animals. There are several Redwood groves you have to see, Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve and Navarro River Redwoods State Park. Also, during the hot days of Summer, there is cold creek near the Farm for afternoon relaxation.
Marty is the founder / farmer of this farm, a licensed California Craft Cannabis Cultivator that ”Plants by the Moon with Sun, Soil & Soul!” The farm is grown on a mountaintop Farm in Mendocino County, CA. With a 10,000 sq ft canopy on 27 acres, it is a SUN+EARTH certified social equity approved small farm doing big things. Located in the premiere heritage cannabis region of the mythic Emerald Triangle, this outdoor, organically grown, single season crop is Award-winning high quality craft cannabis. It has a chapter in The Guru Of Ganja, Ed Rosenthal’s, newest book, “Cannabis Growers Handbook: The Complete Guide to Marijuana and Hemp Cultivation” in the section on “Featured Farms and Growing Styles.” The farm has also been featured in the press in Skunk Magazine, Marijuana Venture & more.
Twenty years ago, Marty and his wife, Laura made the move to California in search of the best herbal medicines for her ailments. They were “medical refugees” at a time when California was the only state in the US with a medical marijuana program & where cannabis was even legal. They eat organic food & wanted organic herb as well. It’s important to them to keep it clean. They cultivate their own cannabis and share a vision that everyone should be able to grow their medicine & tomatoes side by side.. Marty has since gone from growing in the medical model for a collective of patient to obtaining a commercial cultivation license. The main force behind their cross-county journey was for safety from the archaic rules and to learn how to grow the best flowers and also dig into unique Farming techniques and practices.
The farm is cultivated in a closed loop all-natural system, sustainable from start to finish, working with nature’s seasonal rhythmic flows. Marty once worked at Fairchild Botanical Gardens & Montgomery Botanical Center in Miami, FL in their seed department. He has since transferred this knowledge from palms and cycads to cannabis. As a breeder, he hand pollinates his own marijuana seeds, strengthening genetics and creating his own strains / cultivars. Martyjuana plants are born in the soil, raised outside and fed organic amendments, mostly sourced from our farm. Always striving to be as local as possible, the process uses less water, fewer fertilizers, and no chemicals. The integrated pest management methods include releasing beneficial insects multiple times during the grow season. The gardens have a variety of other flowering plants and herbal medicines growing in a symbiotic relationship to the cannabis plants. The recent additions of chickens have been a blessing for pest control, compost fertility, and yummy fresh eggs. The Farm uses a biodynamic philosophy, which is even beyond organic, planting by and adhering to the seasonal cycles of the sun & moon.
With time & the change in both law & mainstream attitudes, the Cleins began to be more public about their endeavors. To that end, Marty has been a 3x California State Fair Ambassador from its inaugural cannabis exhibition, and won a gold medal at the State Fair Cannabis Awards in 2023 with his Supreme Gelato hybrid. Martyjuana also won The Best Of Harvest event for 2023, and is a current finalist for 2024.
The caretaker of the farm is Ben Lewis. He has a background in Viticulture, but loves Cannabis. He is well-rounded with Off-Grid Living. He will be a WEALTH of knowledge for any WWOOFer who REALLY wants to learn.
The farm is confident enough in the sustainable & regenerative practices to say right on the label of his products, “GMO free, Pesticide free, Worry Free”.
June 5th, 2025 UPDATE:
Hey WWOOFers, This is Marty following up with some changes at the Farm. The baby chicks are growing fast. We are going to bring the 2 flocks together in 3 to 4 more weeks. The main garden is being prepped for planting, beginning on the Summer Solstice. The hugels and beds are being top-tilled and racked out. The compost piles are breaking down nicely. We keep turning them and keeping them wet. The new main garden fence is finally finished, so we are also planting the other Food and Flowers, which are used a companion planting next to the Cannabis. We had our first 100 degrees at the Farm, more of those to come as we get into Summer.
November 5th, 2025, Full Moon, Beaver Moon update:
Harvest is finished. The actual cutting of the branches off the Plants and bringing them to the dry/cure barn is done. We have now moved into Post-Harvest Production. That consists of Dry, Cure, Preservation, and Storage, a lot of hands on the actual Flowers. The garden area is beginning to be prepped for Winter time.
We are starting to plant Fall and Winter greens, broccoli, garlic and onions. The weather has been mild overall, so the Summer tomatoes are still producing. The hard shelled Squash and Pumpkins had a high production year, and are still green and lush.
We are beginning to prepare burn-piles to make biochar. The compost piles are full, and need to be flipped every couple weeks. There are some off-season projects of painting, 2 more small buildings that are 10'x12', need a new coat of paint. A few other things to do in the chicken coops and yard.
SPRING 2025 Update:
This is my favorite time of year, though Flower Harvest, late September this year, is a VERY close 2nd, as my favorite time of year.
The farm had several WWOOFers this off season. They got involved with the Animals, and Flower processing. We did a lot of Fire Abatement to expand the safe zone around the Campsite and Garden areas. The water system upgrades are moving slow, but headed in the right direction. We got 2 Roosters, Copperhead and Caspar. They both have 6 hens now and are able to use the main yard every other day, to help keep the flocks separated. We are getting over a dozen delicious eggs everyday.
If you want to help with Spring on our farm, send us a message!!!
PEACE, Marty, Martyjuana
