Food forest in the high desert
Nevada
Hi! We are Lior and Jenny, a couple living with our two young children and a dog on a 1acre piece of land about 20 minutes from Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Lior is an environmental engineer working for the EPA of Nevada, and we're both passionate about ecological restoration and sustainability.
Our core project is to restore the local ecosystem by creating a small, sustainable food forest and replanting trees in this high desert area, a place that was once a forest before being clear-cut during the gold rush era. We’re still in the early stages, so we’re looking for independent, kind, and respectful travelers or backpackers to help us with gardening, planting, light building.
Guests will stay in a cozy tiny house or, if preferred, a tent. Three basic meals will be provided daily. We love welcoming people from all walks of life, as long as they’re comfortable around kids and respect our home and values.
Our farming activities focus on regenerating the land and creating a sustainable, resilient food forest in a high desert environment. Typical tasks include planting and caring for young trees, mulching, composting, building raised beds, chopping firewood, light construction, painting and general outdoor maintenance.
Indoors, help might involve organizing, tidying up while the kids are at school, or assisting with community-related projects.
We’d love to share our knowledge about:
Desert reforestation techniques
Principles of permaculture and sustainable land management
Practical DIY skills (tiny house building, irrigation systems, etc.)
Living off-grid or semi-off-grid with a low environmental footprint
An average day might look like this:
Morning: Wake up, enjoy your breakfast, and begin with about 3 hours of outdoor work (mostly by yearself), maybe tending to the garden, planting trees, or helping with a current building project.
Midday: Free time to rest, hike, explore the area, or just relax in nature.
Evening: Occasionally, we may share a family-style dinner if we’re cooking a large meal. Otherwise, you're responsible for your meals (we will provide).
We aim to keep things flexible and collaborative. If you're motivated, responsible, and open to a bit of dirt under your nails, this will be a rewarding experience, and we’re always happy to share what we’ve learned (and are still learning!) along the way.
WWOOFers will stay in a cozy, private tiny house on our property, complete with a comfortable bed and reliable internet. It’s a peaceful spot surrounded by nature, a great place to rest and recharge after a few hours of hands on work. If someone prefers, there's also the option to camp outside in a tent.
There’s a small kitchen setup for WWOOFers to use. We ask that guests respect our home by keeping things clean, managing their own hygiene, and maintaining a no drugs, no smoking, and no heavy-drinking policy (a little wine is okay!).
As a family, we love spending time outdoors and embracing a simple, nature filled lifestyle. Lior enjoys tinkering with projects related to sustainability and environmental engineering, while Jenny loves gardening and cooking simple, fresh meals. We’re always open to learning new things, whether it’s a new gardening technique or a creative project for the land.
We do enjoy the occasional music night at home, with some acoustic guitar playing or just relaxing with our kids to fun songs. Cooking together is something we cherish, and when we can, we share a meal with guests, often focusing on fresh vegetables.
For activities nearby, you’re in luck, there’s a ton to explore around Lake Tahoe! Whether you love hiking, swimming, mountain biking, skiing, or soaking in hot springs, this area has it all. We’re just a 20-minute drive away from the lake, and the surrounding mountains offer incredible hiking trails. If you love outdoor adventure, there’s no shortage of things to do. There are also plenty of peaceful spots to simply sit back and relax, surrounded by natural beauty.
So, whether you're into high energy activities or just enjoying the quiet of the land, there’s something here for everyone!

I had a blast, Lior is very attentive and kind and funny and considerate!! No complaints. Work load is more than okay and flexible. After finishing my work I grabbed his bike and explored Carson City. I even biked my way to Lake Tahoe, which I did on the day off he gave me because he wanted me to see Tahoe. 10/10 experience and hopefully I can go back. Jenny and the kids also very sweet!! Un abrazo!

Thank you, Jan! You are always welcome back here! You don't need to work 10 hours per day; you can finish your meal, and no one will be shouting at you 😍. You are a great guy, a hard worker, and have a great sense of humor.

I greatly enjoyed my time here at Lior’s place! I spent three full days here and helped with spreading mulch, some planting and soldering for a stuffed toy.
Lior works on multiple self-initiated projects simultaneously, and as an engineer myself, I find Lior incredibly inspiring. As I explore the property, I never know if objects here are bought or DIY built by Lior. 😅👍
Lior was flexible to let me work on some soldering work despite original plans, since it was part of my skillset. He also offered to drive me out for other activities, such as the Carson hot spring which i went with the family. I was also able to take a day off to visit South Lake Tahoe, which I’m very grateful for, and tried to make up for it with more hours the following day.
There’s a private house available discrete from the main house, with a fridge, desk and adequate heating for the winter. The view is superb too.
I really enjoyed spending time with Lior, Jenny, and the children. They are a joyful and inclusive family. Lior is full of ideas, and greatly humorous and kind. I always enjoy our conversations together.
I had an amazing time here. Miss the family already! Wished I had way more time here!!!

My experience with Lior and his family was EXCELLENT. They are generous hosts, easy to get along with, and know the area super well. Lior sent us out with his kayaks a few times with directions to great spots, and knows the best bikes and hikes in their community. The Carson City area is also incredibly beautiful and full of outdoor fun. Accommodations were really nice - we had a pleasant, quiet, private spot with an excellent view for our travel trailer. While I was there, we worked some light construction and I cleared antelope sage from the property, and I had a great time working with Lior! Absolutely no complaints other than we weren't able to stay longer. Thanks, friends!!

I really had an incredible time WWOOFING here. To start, Lior is impressively knowledgeable about many different aspects of DIY construction, environmental restoration and high desert restoration and I learned a ton working with him. I enjoyed all projects I was working on, and the sense of accomplishment after a solid few hours of work. The accommodations were great, a private room not connected to the main house, and the city has some of the best running and hiking Iv ever seen. I would highly recommend this place.
