Hello Wwoofers! We are Brad and Kay...two 67 year old's who have failed at retirement. We live in Naalehu, Hawaii. We own a flower farm and share our home with Asa and Neah, our two Newfoundland dogs. You can always count on your day to include some weeding! On our farm, we mix and apply organic fertilizers, pest control and disease control. We plant, dig and sow various bulbs, tubers and seeds. We have a small home that has a full kitchen, complete bathroom and a common multipurpose. This area includes a clean and private bedroom for your use while here. A comfortable bed is provided for sleeping. The Wwoofers will be preparing their own meals from a well stocked pantry and refrigerator. (See list below) Special dietary preferences will be the responsibility of the individual. Our hobbies include most everything that Hawaii has to offer, such as swimming, hiking, snorkeling and of course plant collections! We love to fish and make widgets in our spare time! Our flower farm is on the main bus line, where you can go all the way around the island, to fun adventures in Kona and Hilo. You can experience snorkeling, hiking, surfing, fishing and other outdoor activities. We are right at the top of South Point road, so if you want to stick your thumb out, I'm sure someone will drive you down to South Point, where you can walk to the famous Green Sands Beach. For those seeking a longer stay, the two-week period will be used to evaluate compatibility. We do a background check for all WwOOfers. We don’t expect you to work long hours, but we do expect you to work hard on the hours that you’re working. Our expectations are a work week of 24 hours. Generally, this includes four, six hour days and then three days off, per week. Our Dahlia farm is continuously visited by our customers during working hours . You will be representing Nanea Gardens in appearance and in attitude you need to be friendly, courteous, and neatly dressed. We do have a few rules (below)… 1) No cell phones in the garden. 2) No smoking (including vaping) in the garden or Wwoofer house. 3) No drugs or partying on property. 4) Please use earbuds after 8 pm in the Wwoofer house, as 8pm-8am are considered quiet time. We strive for this to be a comfortable and restful time for everyone. If you are a young Wwoofer and your parents would like to speak with us ahead of time, we welcome that. Also, feel free to leave emergency contact information with us. Please note that we are in the countryside. Beaches and larger towns require a bus ride or car and are not within walking distance. Here are a few recommendations of what you should bring for work in the garden: Work shoes/boots for gardening A hat Sunscreen A set of clothes that you dont mind getting dirty. Here is a list of food items we provide at the house. Hamburger Tuna Canned chicken Bread Eggs from chicken coop-you get them Instant ramen noodles Granola Breakfast cereal Oatmeal Milk Sugar Coffee Hamburger buns Hamburger patties Sour cream Refried beans Salsa Nacho Chips Mayo Ketchup Mustard Pickles Onions Yogurt Potatoes Velveta cheese Peanut butter Jelly As items get low in stock, please add them to the list on the refrigerator, so I know what needs to be replenished.e

ns were available if I wanted a change. (I really like weeding, so that worked great with me.) I recommend a rental car to maximize the ability to explore locally, though the bus is an option too. Overall, highly recommend these great hosts and location!

We feel privileged to have been hosted by Brad and Kay! From our first enquiry to our arrival Kay quickly communicated details and instructions about our accommodations and work. They went out of their way to work with our schedule too. Brad was an amazing cook and always had a warm homemade dish for our dinners! We feel so blessed to have had an amazing experience with them. We look forward to possibly going back!

Kay and Brad were amazing hosts! They’re very kind and made sure we had everything we needed. So easy to work for and they were very grateful for all the work we did. I would absolutely recommend anyone to wwoof with them!

Kay and Brad are very kind, welcoming and friendly. They were very flexible with our work schedule and the work we did. The accommodations were comfortable with private rooms and a fully equipped kitchen. They provided food for us to prepare our own breakfast and lunch, and cooked very good dinners each night. We helped them propagate ginger plants for resale, and weed and edge the flower beds.

Kay and Brad are very kind and generous, offering food and nice housing in exchange for 3.4 hours of work a day. Kay is always open to questions and tries to make our time there more comfortable and enjoyable. The work is mostly weeding but if we get bored, they will give us other tasks around the garden. There is a lot of flexibility on when you want to put in hours but they like to have us work mornings on Mondays and Tuesdays. They are very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about gardening so if you want to learn, try to schedule your hours when they’re working and ask questions! Getting around the island without a car is difficult but if you plan your day well, it is definitely possible! The location is right on the Mamalahoa Hwy so it is right on the bus route and you can also hitchhike to south point and nearby beaches like Punalu’u (black sand).

Kay & Brad are gracious, caring, and attentive hosts, not to mention all around great people! The work on the farm was fair and they gave great flexibility to get one's hours done 3.4 hrs per day minus arrival & departure days. . The WWOOFng house has electricity, a full bath and extra toilet, full kitchen, fridge freezer. Everyone has their own private cozy room! They provided ample and delicious food. Woody the wild rooster has no sense of time but makes up for it in looks. It's very peaceful on the farm and the full moons are stunning. It is possible to get around without private transportation, but takes time. Kay did offer rides into town and such. Very generous! I hitchhiked back from Cooks Bay (2.5 hrs) and was able to h.hike to Naalehu and Black Sands Beach after work one day. It's safe but you need patience and be willing to walk. Kay has a bus schedule that shows you how to get to Kona, Hilo and the Volcano. It is 12 miles from the ocean (not really beaches in this area, more rocky coasts) but it's pretty easy to hitch a ride there and totally worth the view. A magnificent wee cave and a place you can jump off the cliff. They have two adorable giant dogs and a farm cat. Marcus at the hotdog stand is a sweetheart. This is my first experience and I'd do it again, at 63!! Notes: bring your own first aid kit (vitamins, Neosporin, etc) and some old clothes that can get filthy. A pair of work shoes and a pair of house slippers flops to stay clean. No real mosquitos.
