I am one of the leaders of the natural beekeeping movement. I live in Southeastern Nebraska. I live in a 5,000 sq ft mansion with my wife, my son, my daughter-in-law, three grandkids, two Golden Doodles, a lot of chickens and a lot of bees. I practice treatment free beekeeping. Mostly my goal is to raise a lot of queens that don't require treatments. I also usually harvest some honey. I have an 18 acre farm and two out yards where I have bees. I run around 200 hives in the peak of the season.
We do treatment free beekeeping and want to make treatment free queens available. Intern/Apprentice will receive training in all aspects of queen rearing, queen marketing and treatment free beekeeping, as well as room and board in exchange for work at queen rearing and other farm work. You will learn to set up “swarm box” queen cell starters, queen right cell finishers, queen mating nucs, graft larvae into queen cups, catch, mark and bank queens, ship queens, handle orders, build equipment, repair equipment, do splits (make new colonies), catch swarms, remove bees from houses, and many other aspects of running an apiary. You will have access to an awesome library of bee books and access to my discussion of any aspect of bees or beekeeping that you would like.
The room is in a beautiful solid brick house that was completed in 1895. It is five thousand square feet and has 7 people living in it currently. I need someone from April until September. You can make yourself at home. You will be part of the family. You may have to forage for breakfast. You are welcome to cook your own (plenty of food in the fridge) or have some cereal or toast etc. Often my wife will cook breakfast and usually she will cook lunch and supper. On weekends I usually cook breakfast. The most often complaint I have had from interns in the past is that the food is too delicious and they eat too much.
I have too many hobbies to list, but playing guitar and singing would be high on the list. Usually during beekeeping season, I'm too busy to do much else. Winter is time for other things.
