If you're seeking a tranquil tropical setting, enjoy working in and around nature and building community, then join us on our 160 acre farm in the mountains above Mayaguez with panoramic views of the foothills, the entire west coast from Cabo Rojo to Rincon and the Carribbean beyond with Desecheo and Isla Mona visible on sunny days. Our farm sits at 1500ft right off a federal mountain highway halfway between Mayaguez and Las Marias, with both great access and extensive privacy and tranquility. We offer a unique view into rural Caribbean life, despite being only a short 30 minute drive to downtown Mayaguez and several local beaches which we like to frequent on the weekends.
We are seeking people with a passion for projects and experiences that span sustainable agriculture, trail making, land stewardship, construction/restoration, and community living. We're working to revitalize what was once the primary Hacienda in the area and grow the space into a thriving co-living and volunteer community, that will in turn support the local community by promoting permaculture and sustainable living and building practices.
We’re a family who left city life behind to bring ourselves closer to the things that sustain us and regain the sense of community and direct involvement in nature we had been missing. This farm has been our dream and labor of love for over three years, and after much effort and major projects, we're finally beginning the journey of opening up to outside volunteers.
WWOOFers will be welcomed as part of our daily life on the farm, participating jointly and projects to advance or tasks to maintain, and sharing in meals and downtime activities at one's own discretion. While we balance farm work with raising two small children and remote jobs, we’re committed to creating an environment that is safe, welcoming, and an unfiltered window into rural tropical life in Puerto Rico.
Agricultural activities on the farm range from gardening, feeding and restocking water for animals (we are leasing horses and are looking into getting sheep for land clearing), to brush clearing or soil prep, and planting. More broadly as the community grows there is also things like road maintenance (brush cutting, culvert clearing, branch removal) as well as occasionally projects for development like painting, plastering, landscaping, and light construction. We prefer to focus on only 1-2 activities a day per person, and like to avoid the strong sun. Workdays usually range from a 6-8 am start and stopping no later than noon. Afternoons and evenings are usually free time, we just ask that the facilities are respected and kept clean as we've worked hard to provide an excellent living space for volunteers.
We have two buildings on the farm for guests, a small 1 bedroom 1 bath w/ kitchen and living room available now, and a converted hacienda with 6 bedroom 2 bath with kitchen and multiple communal rooms that will be ready around 2026. While we will cook some fully communal meals (some dinners), we provide stocked pantries and functioning kitchens so guests can prepare meals to their own liking. Please be capable of cooking for yourself. Upon scheduling a zoom/factime call to meet before accepting your stay, we will discuss any allergies or preferred foods, keeping in mind that certain speciality items may have to be bought by the Wwoofer. We DO NOT allow smoking on the property.
Bear in mind this property is naturally jungle, and with that comes tropical insects (spiders that are not harmful, mosquitos, ants, etc), reptiles (there are no venomous snakes in PR), heat and humidity; while we provide clean, screened in, well-ventilated and in certain areas temperature-controlled living spaces, we cannot and do not wish to control the outdoors the same way. Adequate attire for outdoor work is breathable long sleeve shirts and pants, with boots and a hat for the sun.
We are often busy with the realities of running a farm and business while raising children, but when we do have free time we love the beach, cooking a wide array of food, hikes, dance parties, and visiting farmers markets and festivals.
Nearby there are several waterfalls, plenty of hiking, bike riding, 4-wheeler and dirtbike tracks, and a bar/restaurant/event space which we also operate that hosts local sporting events, private parties, and a farmers market on a rotating calendar. Las Marias and Maricao are small towns with lovely festivals less than 10 minutes away by car; and the local bus stop will take you down to Mayaguez in 30 minutes which has a major college campus, multiple town centers, and countless things to do.
