Hello WWOOFers my name is River and I am the general manager of our resort on Ocas Island. We operate a 1+ acre seed to table garden for our critically lauded cafe. We have anywhere from 10-20 employees living on property, depending on the season, and provide onsite housing. We have 33 cabins, 30 campsites, 9 yurts and a geodesic dome. We operate a clothing optional spa with sauna and soaking tubs.
The work would consist of cultivating and harvesting fresh produce for our cafe with a strong emphasis on education. Bed prep, sowing beds and flats, harvesting fruits and vegetables. building compost piles and weeding are all a part of what we do everyday.
Most meals would be provided by the Doe Bay Cafe, often as takeaway sack lunches or dinners. Any remaining meals would be prepared by our WWOOFing team of two as part of their daily work and included in the 5-6 hours per day with two days off. We would provide the ingredients, including fresh produce from the land.
During our moderate summers June-September) we offer fully outfitted (bed, loveseat, clothing storage) off-grid 9x9 canvas tents. Outside of summer months you would be housed in a private studio cabin. Staff shares an indoor communal kitchen stocked with cookware and dinner ware and oufitted with food storage, refrigeration and range. Most staff cabins and tents share a duplex showerhouse with shower, toilet and wash basin. Communal bathhouses for guests also exist and are available for staff.
Live music is a huge part of Doe Bay and many of us, including myself, are musicians. We host the Imagine Music and Arts Festival in September and host an artist in residence program through summer. We are well known for Doe Bay Fest an event that we no longer host. Amazing locally grown and prepared food defines Orcas Island and the islander culture with a very strong culinary sensibility. Orcas is very rural and there are great opportunities for kayaking, hiking, fishing, boating, foraging and immersion in nature.
