Rural farmstead focused on self sustainability and helping local community
Oklahoma
Hi, my name is CHELLE. My husband and I moved to SE Oklahoma from TX 10 years ago when my husband retired. We have a pretty signifiant age gap (22 yrs) so I’m lucky to be able to start this amazing lifestyle and do what truly sparks me. It’s been a huge adjustment and a lot of hard work getting things set up, learning all the things and figuring it all out on my own. We bought 55 raw acres and have improved and built everything ourselves. It’s been a true act of love. We are excited to meet new people and teach and learn along side you. I’m annoyingly passionate about this lifestyle and excited to meet others that want to learn and are excited about the future of agriculture and self sustainability.
It’s been a grand adventure setting things up and getting our systems and infrastructure in place. It’s still evolving each season as we add, subtract and improve. A typical day for me is up and at it by 8am tending the many animals. We have 6 dogs, 10 cats, cattle, rabbits, chickens and ducks at the moment. We have had goats and pigs in the past and plan to add them back in the near future. After the animals are tended I start garden chores. I have 2 1/2 gardens and looking to expand and improve. Our biggest goals are to produce 80% of all our food, medicinal herbs along with our hygiene and household items. We’re very close. Some days after morning chores we may focus on preserving garden produce, processing animals or making products such as soaps, body wash, lip balm, salves, tinctures, canning etc. We typically do a split shift so if you volunteer, we would likely do four hours in the morning or two in the morning and two in the late afternoon. That can be discussed and we are always flexible…We’re currently working on several different projects. The largest is expanding our cattle pastures and dividing them for rotational grazing. Some other projects are clearing and maintaining trails and perimeter of property, expanding our on ground rabbit grow out space, felling trees and saving the cedars for building projects, setting up an outdoor “entertainment” space w/ activities like horseshoe throw, Ax throwing, giant jenga, darts, hammocks, trampoline etc. You def won’t be bored here. Theres plenty of unfinished projects and materials to start your own. I am open to suggestions and will encourage you to express your creativity. I would love a creative person to help in designing functional spaces and helping implement them. I’m not looking to micro manage anyone. I’m looking for motivated individuals that want to be a part of improving what we’ve started.
The meals provided will be 80% from what we produce here. A typical breakfast would be an egg quiche with veg and or meat. Or Eggs, bacon, and biscuits with jam. A typical lunch would be a bowl of soup with bread or a quick sandwich or hamburger w/ grilled veg. Dinner is usually our largest meal. A typical dinner would consist of homemade pizzas, chuck roast with potatoes, carrots, and onion, a pot of beans with sausage, smoked rabbit with garden salad, and grilled vegetables.. Or sausage dogs or beef dogs around the campfire. We do have a small guest cabin that has a queen bed, full bath, kitchenette, living area with TV and a loft with two twin beds. There’s a small covered porch with rocking chairs. Your own personal fire pit and a trampoline. It has water, electric, AC and heat.I have no plans of double booking so the guest cabin would be 💯 yours privately. I am open to a group of woofers or a family as I can accommodate up to 4 in the cabin. We also have a few tents you are welcome to use or bring your own as there are several secluded camp sites on our property if you wanted to spend a little time roughing it and being one with nature.
My hobbies consist of all things homestead related. Gardening. Animals, learning new skills and improving on the ones I already have. A good day is a day I’ve learned something new. We do have kayaks that you can use (with or without me) or there are several places locally that you can rent kayaks, paddle boats, canoes, Jon boats, paddle boards, etc. we are about 4 miles from the Kiamichi river, 10 miles from Hugo Lake State Park, 60 miles from Paris, Texas, and 60 miles from Broken Bow, Oklahoma. Lots of outdoor recreation here. We are 2 1/2 hrs from Dallas , Tx and 2 1/2 hrs from Tulsa, OK and 3 hrs from OK City. Several rivers and lakes. Lots of hiking trails as well.
Side note: We are open to pets and children but do have some concerns so am happy to discuss and set boundaries so we don’t have to exclude anyone. Safety for our animals, property and guests are our #1 priority.
