We are a family run English style You-pick flower farm in Alden, a small historic Northern Michigan village. We grow classic America flowers plus herbs for bouquet cutting. We have 3 children at home and 2 with disabilities, 3 cats, and 2 Bernese Mountain dogs. We are open in the mornings to the public to come and cut a bouquet, 5 mornings a week. Wednesday and Sunday we are closed. We need help amending and turning our 34+ rows over, watering, planting, pinching and fertilizing. Our days run from 8 am-1 pm. We have breakfast, then as a team take on different tasks some are: weeding, spreading implements, laying waterlines and fabric, planting and watering all our plugs until the are in the ground, learning how we fertilize, water and deadhead. We eat as a family, mostly a buffet style in our family home. We have a large table and a sandwich bar an island that we have available for guests. We usually cook from scratch and have farm fresh egg and raw cows milk. We have a family vegetable garden we try to mostly eat out of for summer. Winters can be rough here so we enjoy the sunshine when summer is here! We enjoy hiking as a family, swimming, boating on Torch, walking our pups and we like to play our musical instruments together as a family as someof us are learning new instruments. We teach sourdough bread making who are interested in learning a stiff starter method and have a shed studio for Art therapy and watercolor classes along with flower arranging demonstrations. Sarah’s family was an American Youth hostel during the 70’s-80’s and is excited with her husband to invite guests to stay. We are a family of faith and healing and welcome guests from all walks of life or religions who want to come learn and share with us their own expertise and wisdom in organic farming.

From the moment I drove up to the beautiful farm to the day I left, I was embraced and accepted by Sarah and her wonderful family. They are passionate about farming, educated on sustainable and organic techniques, and have the biggest hearts of anyone you will meet. My work mostly consisted of weeding in the flower field, providing extra hands in the kitchen, small jobs around the property with another WWOOFer, and helping with wedding preparation tasks (which was a rare circumstance). The natural beauty of the farm and the sense of community that surrounds you here is healing to the soul. Acres of beautiful Michigan land, belly laughter around the table, and sunsets that take your breath away all add to the magic of this place. I chose this farm in hopes to get closer to the earth, bond with people of similar interests, and search for some peace before reentering my life back in the city. And boy, did I achieve all of these goals, and more! Thank you for an unforgettable week and for being a newfound family. I had the opportunity to live and work on this beautiful flower farm for three weeks, and I’m genuinely grateful for the experience. From the beginning, I felt welcomed into the rhythm of the farm and family life. The mornings were spent working together—planting, watering, weeding, caring for the flowers, and learning some of what goes into keeping such a beautiful place growing. The work was meaningful, the setting was peaceful, and there was something special about watching people arrive in the mornings to walk the rows and cut their own bouquets. What stood out most to me was the sense of family and community. Sharing meals around the table, spending time with the family, the animals, and other guests made the experience feel like much more than simply exchanging work for a place to stay. There is a genuine desire here to share what they have, teach what they know, and also learn from the people who come through their doors. I especially appreciated the family’s openness about their faith, healing, and life experiences while still welcoming people from different backgrounds and beliefs. There is a lot of heart behind what they are building here. My three weeks gave me a chance to slow down, work with my hands, spend time outdoors, and experience a different way of living.
